Those taking part in the race at this year’s Luana Daze won’t run or walk through blasts of color as they have the last two years. Rather, participants will go through the Tough Scramble Obstacle Course, a 2.5-mile trek through eight to 10 obstacles of varying degrees of difficulty. (NIT file photo)

Luana will host its annual Luana Daze celebration on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 27 and 28.

New this year will be the Tough Scramble Obstacle Course, which will replace the color blast 5K walk/run held the last two years. The race will begin at 8 a.m. (registration begins at 7:15 a.m.) on Saturday, in front of the Luana Tap, taking participants on a 2.5-mile trek through eight to 10 obstacles. Some of the obstacles will include a tire flip, round bale climb, army crawl, water slide and balance beam. All obstacles in this non-competitive event will have varying degrees of difficulty; people can choose which obstacles they would like to complete. The race will end in front of the Luana Tap.

While the race gets started at 8 a.m., those not participating can head to the pancake and sausage breakfast put on by the Luana Community Club. The event will run until 10:30 a.m. Also being offered beginning at 8 a.m. are Todd’s Bloody Marys and mimosas, offered by Todd Olson, owner of the Luana Tap.

At 10 a.m., the Luana Tractor Ride will get underway at Luther Keehner’s shop. At noon, check out the firemen waterball fights (registration is at 11 a.m.). Registration for the bean bag tournament will begin at noon, with the contest commencing at 1 p.m.

Another new feature at this year’s Luana Daze is a car show sponsored by Sautter’s Auto Sales and Service. Registration will take place from 10 a.m. to noon, with the show held from noon to 2 p.m. Trophies will be awarded in the categories of Chevy, Olds, Pontiac, Buick, Ford, Chrysler, Dodge and other, as well as kid’s choice and people’s choice. The public is invited to vote for their favorite car.

Saturday evening, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., Luana Daze attendees can enjoy music by Uncle Sam’s Band for the 10th annual Luana Tap Street Dance.

Fun continues Sunday, Aug. 28, with the tractor pull. Registration begins at 11 a.m., while the pull starts at noon.

On both days, the Luana firemen will provide brats and chips from noon until the food is gone. The National Honor Society will also have the shake machine at Luana Daze.
