The Marquette Council, at its Jan. 17 meeting, agreed to contribute $378 to Walter Stavroplus to complete the funding for his Eagle Scout project.

Stavroplus’ project included major updates to the kitchen portion of the shelter in the city park, which is used for both private and community functions. The kitchen is especially important to the Boy Scouts and Marquette American Legion, who sell food during the flea markets in order to raise funds for their organizations.

The project, Stavroplus explained, began in Sept. 2015, with the creation of a cement patio for the food stand. Over the next year, additional work included new walls, painting and varnishing of shelves and cabinets, a new epoxy coating on the floor and new counter tops. In total, the work cost $3,760, Stavroplus said.

Stavroplus said he also would have liked to work on the ceiling, but ran out of time and felt it could be a project for a future scout.

The city was happy to aid the project, with councilwoman Cindy Halvorson noting, “You did a wonderful job for the city of Marquette.”

“Thank you for the work,” added mayor Larry Breuer. “It looks great.”

With 2017 underway, Breuer said he’s also looking for additional ideas or projects that can better Marquette.

“We’re starting a new year, and I want everyone to have a positive outlook on our community,” he said. “Economic development is really needed in this community, so we need some ideas. We also need ideas at the Wetlands Centre. We want to keep it going and make it better.”
