PdC girls cross country team headed to State Meet
Prairie du Chien is sending a cross country team to the State Meet for the first time since 1978. The girls were Sectional Champions on Saturday in Platteville.
They placed four girls in the top nine to score just 50 points. McFarland took second with 79 points. Junior Amber Huser led the team with a fourth place finish. Sophomore Karly Jaynes was less than one second behind in fifth. Freshman Meg Katzung was sixth, freshman Greta Hein ninth and junior Ella Hein 26th, to all score for the varsity team. Jadyn Jenks finished in 59th and Faith Dillman was 76th.
“Saturday was an incredible day! The girls worked so hard for this. They ran all summer long with the hopes of doing well this season, but to finish first in the sectional is a dream come true,” said Coach Kathleen Hein. “It has been a pleasure to work with a group of kids as special as this entire group has been. Many times this year we have seen the cross country team runners use the mentality of, ‘I don’t have to run, but rather, I get to run.’ This has led to a vision and goal for the year that the possibility of going to state was within reach for this young team.”
“At sectionals, when their legs were tired at the end, the team ran with their hearts and the goal became a reality for the first time in 39 years,” added Assistant Coach Mike Liddell.
The boys’ team took 14th with 458 points. Blake Bartels was first for the team in 84th place. Jayce Sexton was second, followed by Charlie Eastman, Collin Seeley and Brady Bartels. Brady finished the year with a personal record time.
A pep rally is planned for the girls’ team at 3:20 p.m. on Thursday. The team will run at the State Meet in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1:20. A fan bus will leave from the school.
