Marian S. Benson, 96, passed away with her daughter by her side, Friday, October 27, in the Elkader Care Center. Born October 7, 1921 in Chillicothe, IL, Marian was the daughter of Philip and Sophie (Christensen) Ellberg. Educated in Morris, IL she received her LPN from Morris Hospital. She worked there upon graduation. In 1941, Marian met the love of her life when Russell I. Benson came into the hospital, suffering injuries from a car accident. She was his nurse and he said she gave such good back rubs, he just had to marry her. The two married on Oct 16, 1942 and farmed his family farm in Wauponsee Township.

When not helping on the farm, Marian worked for many years at the Tratt Clinic. Upon retiring, she could be found volunteering for “We Care” or at the Morris Hospital. She was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Morris.

Family and friends were Marian’s love and joy. She and Russell loved to dance. After losing him far too young, she made many trips to Elkader, Iowa to spend time with her daughter’s family. In 2013, she moved to Iowa. Marian spent her life helping others. She also enjoyed traveling, reading and being with friends.

Surviving are her son Gerald of Joliet, her daughter, Kay Ann (Jay) Moser of Elkader, Iowa; grandsons Christopher (Melissa) Benson, Keith (Jody) Benson, Eric (Brieanne) Benson, Jason Benson, Benjamin (Jenna) Moser, Jonathon (Cheri) Moser; 17 great-grandchildren; her sister Thelma (Russel) Miller; many nieces, nephews;  friends including a dear friend, Nancy Henricksen.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Russell (1983), her son, Kenneth (2009); two brothers, Philip and James; four sisters, Fern Anderson, Freda Chopp, Rosetta Esterland, and Anna “Clare” Mangum.

Friends called from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, November 2, 2017, at U.C.Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, 301 W. Washington St., Morris. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 3, 2017, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Sample Cemetery.
