Gary Gene Stewart, 77, passed away on Oct. 27, 2017, at Ennoble Skilled Nursing Center in Dubuque.

Visitation was Friday, Nov. 3, at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home in Elkader and before services at the church.

Memorial services were Saturday, Nov. 4, at Hope Lutheran Church, Littleport, conducted by Rev. Margaret Yackel-Juleen.

Inurnment was at Bethel Cemetery, rural Osterdock.

Gary was born on Sept. 21, 1940, in rural Garber, the son of Samuel and Blanche (Hansel) Stewart. He attended Colesburg School and then entered the Army from 1960-1963.

On April 8, 1967, Gary was joined in marriage to Marilyn (Barnhart) at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. This past April, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They resided in Dubuque, and then in 1980 moved to Littleport, and then Elkader in 1999. 

Gary was a mechanic for 30+ years, receiving his training while in the Army. He enjoyed fixing things, playing cards, hunting and fishing, shooting the breeze with everyone and most of all spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Stewart; two children, Patty Schulte and Brian (Kristine) Stewart; five grandchildren, Allison Schulte, Orie Schulte, Brianna Stark, Logan Stewart and Tyler Stewart; two sisters, Doris Ludovissy and Wanda Amsden; sister-in-law, Leana Stewart; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Roy Stewart; two brother-in-laws, Mervin Ludovissy and Lloyd Amsden and one nephew, Larry Purman.
