Central students make presentation on water

Central students Haley Frieden, Karleigh Thorson, Carly Kluesner, and Katelyn Scherf shared their research on the amount of water people use when showering.

As part of a 7th grade English class assignment, Central students read A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. According to teacher Amy Bergan, the book is two stories told in alternating sections. The first is current day dealing with the fact that women and children in Africa spend their days walking to get the family’s daily water. This part of the narrative discusses the problems that arise from using unclean water as well as the fact that girls receiving no education because they spend all of there time collecting water.
.The second part of the book is from the Sudan Crisis and the Sudanese Lost Boys. It’s focus is the will to survive.
Students were also involved with projects for this unit in social studies, science, and math. They created presentations (poster, PowerPoints, brochures and so on) to informs the public on issues from civil wars, water in Clayton County and local watershed, water usage practices
Students were available at FreedomBank to visit with community members about these issues and give a demonstration on what is it like to carry water and how much would have to be carried for a days usage in rural Africa as well as how much water Americans use. Informational brochures were available to take home and donations for the Sudan water well project were accepted.
The presentations were made the at the bank community room for easy access as construction is happening at the school.
