At the Prairie du Chien School Board meeting Monday night, the board approved of having High School Principal Andy Banasik pursue funding options for the purchase of scoreboards and bleachers for the new, big gymnasium that was part of the $19.7 million facilities upgrade project.

Banasik will bring his findings and recommendations back to the board at a later date. Monday night’s discussion involved the possibility of two video scoreboards for the main court and two more smaller scoreboards. Banasik has been in contact with Daktronics and said the two video scoreboards are estimated at a total of $90,000. The two other scoreboards were estimated at $9,000 total. There is expected to be a fund-raising effort involving private donors. It was also noted that the scoreboards might be able to be leased for five years. The revenue raised for the scoreboards could also help to purchase bleachers. Bleachers for 2,100 people are estimated at $190,000. Banasik and several board members said that through the fund-raising efforts with private donors and also by leasing, the scoreboards and bleachers would be paid off in 10 years at no cost to the taxpayers.

With bleachers for 2,100, the high school would be able to host sectionals for wrestling, basketball and other such events, which would result in revenue coming into the school district and the community.

In other business, Duane Rogers of Driftless Development talked to the board about possibly hiring a theater director for the new 766-seat auditorium. Andy Banasik told the board that he has been getting numerous phone calls from organizations interested in booking the auditorium.

Banasik said there is no contract structure at this time in order to book the various entities who would like to use the auditorium. Rogers, Banasik and the board said a theater director might very well be necessary in order to book entities and also to promote and manage the facility. It was not certain if a theater director would be full-time or part-time. The board decided to have a special meeting on Nov. 26 at 5 p.m. in the Little Theater at the high school to discuss the theater director position further. Also, a meeting will be held on Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. in the auditorium to discuss the itinerary, performances, technical assistance, marketing, costs and fees for the theater.

In further business, it was noted that the deadline for incumbents to file notice of non-candidacy for the next school board election is Dec. 21 at 5 p.m. The incumbents up for re-election are Cassie Hubanks and Lynn O’Kane. The deadline for filing for candidacy to run for the school board is Jan. 2, 2019 at 5 p.m.
