The Clayton Ridge/Central (CR/C) War Eagles wrapped up their regular season last week with an overall record of 4-14.

The final week before the playoffs started on July 6, with a doubleheader against the MFL Mar-Mac Bulldogs. In game one, the War Eagles were winning 2-1 heading into the sixth inning when the Bulldog bats exploded for five runs, putting the game out of reach. The War Eagles eventually lost the game 9-4.

While CR/C actually totaled more hits than the Bulldogs, it was the amount of walks (six), hit batters (two) and stolen bases allowed (five) that were the team’s undoing.

Caleb Helle was 1-3 for the War Eagle offense, with an RBI and run scored. Oakley Harbaugh doubled, drove in a run and scored once, while Caden Helle’s stat line included two hits and run scored.

In game two of the doubleheader, CR/C fell 10-3. The War Eagles struggled to advance base runners, totaling seven hits (all singles), but only coming away with three runs. The Bulldogs turned their 10 hits (eight singles) into 10 runs.

Harbaugh was the star of the game for the War Eagles, finishing with two hits and two RBIs. Brandon Thiese was 2-2, walked and scored, and Dylan Ludovissy had a hit, walk and RBI. Drake Ostrander finished the game 1-3 and scored twice.

The team then faced the Sumner-Fredericksburg Cougars on July 7. The War Eagle defense committed eight errors in the game, and pitching allowed six walks and five stolen bases.

The offense couldn’t overcome it, only putting up five hits, two of which were by sophomore Caleb Helle. Ostrander, Sean Wilwert and Elliot Kelly added the others. In the end, the War Eagles lost 6-1.

CR/C took on the Starmont Stars on July 8, putting on a show for a triumphant end to the season. Freshman Caden Helle went five strong innings, striking out six batters in an impressive 7-2 victory.

He was helped out by an offense that came out of its slumber. Ostrander led the way with three hits, two runs, two RBIs and a stolen base. Hazen Loan went 2-3 with a walk and two runs scored, while Thiese was 2-4 with an RBI. Kelly added a hit and scored a run.

The Eagles were scheduled to play the 3-8 Bellevue Comets Saturday, July 11, in the first round of the playoffs, but the game was postponed due to weather. The make-up date was Monday, July 13.
