Chamber schedules some summer events but cancels GermanFest

The Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce board of directors met on July 8 for their monthly meeting to discuss the remaining Chamber events scheduled for this summer and fall. The board decided to proceed with some annual summer events, but cancelled what would have been the 30th annual GermanFest celebration.

Chamber Director Mandy Ludovissy issued the following statement explaining the board's decision:

"In order to decrease the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the Governor of Iowa has restrictions on community events; event organizers are responsible for ensuring precautions and safety measures are implemented and enforced. The nature and activities of each event are vastly different and must be considered individually; thus, some events are feasible, some are not. 

"Guttenberg is fortunate to have proactive leadership within the community hospital to help establish what activities are safe during this pandemic and which need to be avoided.  

"Celebrate Guttenberg weekend will kick off with the Chamber of Commerce fish fry on Friday, Aug. 7.  Locally-caught fish and a variety of sides will be available in the Ingleside Park gazebo from 4-8 p.m. during the last River of Music concert for 2020.  Curbside pickup will be available.  

"Guttenberg retailers will offer sidewalk sales on Saturday, Aug. 8, along with the weekly Farmers Market.  The annual Youth Fishing Tournament, hosted by the Guttenberg Motel, will be held in the morning of Saturday, Aug. 8, as well.  

"The U.S. Army Golden Knight Parachute Team jump, originally scheduled for July 4, has been rescheduled for Sunday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m.  A final decision for this event has not been made.  

"Like nearly all other Oktoberfest-type celebrations scheduled for this fall, Guttenberg GermanFest has been cancelled.  The GermanFest committee is committed to bringing the best GermanFest ever for 2021 and encourages everyone to stay safe and mark their calendars for Sept. 24-25, 2021.
