The County Highway N Project in Crawford County is now complete.

“Paving was completed on Sept. 23 by Iverson Construction (of Kieler, Wis.), and striping was completed yesterday (Oct. 5),” said Crawford County Highway Commissioner Kyle Kozelka.

County N, between Highway 35 and Highway 27, consisted of two projects. The Famechon Hill project was completed in the fall of 2019, with a few punch list items wrapped up this spring. The second project was a county project which utilized the excess material (sand, dirt, rock) from the Famechon Hill Project. The second project was just completed.

Crawford County received a federal grant for $2.98 million for the $3.8 million Famechon Hill Project. The project involved reconstruction of the intersection of Highway 35 and County N and also 1.46 miles of County N going up the hill from Highway 35.

Multiple substandard geometric features were reconstructed including horizontal curves, vertical curves and steep grades to make the road much safer for motorists.

Construction began in June of 2019. The prime contractor was Peter James of H. James and Sons of Fennimore.

The second project began about one mile east of where the Famechon Hill Project ended and was extended about 1.25 miles farther up toward Highway 27.

This portion of County N was once hillier, but the hills were cut down somewhat and fill added in some locations to make the roadway flatter and safer. This portion was not paved, however, until recently. The project is now complete. There was approximately $76,000 of Local Roads Improvement Program funds used on the second project, which was the county project.
