The MFL MarMac volleyball team upped its record to 6-9 last week, following up a loss to West Central with a victory over South Winneshiek.

The Bulldogs took on the Upper Iowa Conference-leading Blue Devils in Monona on Oct. 6, losing in straight sets, 3-0. The first two sets were back-and-forth affairs, with MFL MarMac narrowly falling 25-23 and 25-22. West Central put the match away in the third, however, claiming a 25-18 advantage.

Riley Moreland led the Bulldogs with 11 of the team’s 17 kills, and had two of five blocks. Her defensive effort also included 19 digs. The Gillitzer sisters, Kayden and Brooke, were active at the net as well, with two kills apiece.

Abby Schellhorn racked up six assists and Lakota Morrissey had a team-high eight. With 25 digs, Lexy Johnson was a back row force for the Bulldogs.

From the serving line, MFL MarMac had 94.7 percent efficiency. Moreland made all 11 of her attempts and Kayden Gillitzer was a perfect 9-9. Schellhorn made 9 of 10 and Johnson 13 of 15, including two of the team’s three aces. Morrissey was 6-6 and had the other ace.

MFL MarMac got back in the win column Oct. 8, sweeping the visiting Warriors 3-0. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 25-19 start in set one, but the second was neck-and-neck, requiring extra points to pick up the 27-25 victory. MFL MarMac then closed out the match with a 25-21 win in the final set.

With 11 kills and three blocks, Moreland continued to be the Bulldogs’ biggest threat at the net. She was key in the back row too, digging 12 balls. Grace Anderson picked up three kills and one of the team’s six blocks, while Kayden Gillitzer had three kills and Karli Tilson had two kills and a block.

Johnson snagged a team-high 20 digs, Miranda Lang had nine and Carlie Jones six. Morrissey was the assist leader, with 14, while Schellhorn chipped in eight.

Morrissey was one of the Bulldogs’ top servers against the Warriors, completing 11 of 12 attempts and smashing four aces. Johnson was 12-16 with two aces and Schellhorn made seven of eight serves, including an ace. Kayden Gillitzer was a perfect 10-10 and Moreland 9-9 on the night.

The Bulldogs will finish out their regular season schedule this week with conference games at Clayton Ridge on Tuesday, Oct. 13, then at Kee on Thursday, Oct. 15. The team will kick off postseason action on Monday, Oct. 19, hosting South Winn in Monona. The game will start at 7 p.m.
