The MFL MarMac volleyball team’s playoff run was cut short last week, as the Bulldogs were beaten by Sumner-Fredericksburg just two days after an opening round victory over South Winneshiek.

The Bulldogs hosted South Winn on Oct. 19, sweeping the fellow Upper Iowa Conference team 3-0.  They dominated the game, winning the opening set 25-18 and the final two by scores of 25-14.

Riley Moreland led MFL MarMac at the net, with nine kills and one of the team’s two blocks. Kayden Gillitzer tallied seven kills, while Aleyna Rodriguez contributed five, and Karli Tilson added one kill and one block.

From the back row, Lexy Johnson picked up 21 digs. Miranda Lang and Moreland each had nine, Rodriguez eight and Gillitzer seven.

Abby Schellhorn had the top spot in assists, with 10, and Lakota Morrissey followed with eight.

The Bulldogs had a spectacular serving night, completing over 95 percent of attempts. Lang made all 11 of her serves, including two of the team’s seven aces. Johnson was a perfect 12-12 with an ace, Morrissey 11-11 with an ace and Gillitzer 9-9 with an ace. Thirteen of Moreland’s 14 serves were successful and she also had an ace.

Unfortunately, it was a different story in the regional quarterfinal at Sumner-Fred on Oct. 21. MFL MarMac struggled to keep pace out of the gate, losing the first set 25-9. Although the second and third frames were closer, the Bulldogs still lost 25-16 and 25-17.

MFL MarMac had just 12 kills in the game—eight of them from Moreland. Grace Anderson had a team-leading two blocks, while Moreland and Brooke Gillitzer each picked up one.

In the digs column, Johnson amassed 11, followed by Moreland with six. Morrissey notched four digs and five assists.

From the serving line, the Bulldogs’ completion percentage dropped down to 91 percent. Moreland made all nine of her attempts, including one of the team’s four aces. Johnson went a perfect 8-8 and also picked up an ace.

MFL MarMac wrapped up the season with an overall record of 8-11.
