Raymond L. Check, 97, of Prairie du Chien, passed away on Friday, Jan 22, 2021, at Crossing River Health in Prairie du Chien. 

He was born on April 16, 1923, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (White) Check. Raymond married Virginia Stoeffler on Oct. 8, 1948, in Prairie du Chien. He worked for Steiner Construction for many years. Raymond was a proud veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army at Normandy Beach on the second day. 

He was an avid fisherman, gardener, and a very religious man. He always volunteered at church functions and the nursing home. 

He is survived by his sons, Raymond (Pam) and David Check; three grandchildren, Regina, Eric and Amy; five great-grandchildren, Kadence, Matthew, Austi, Calleigh, and Alexandra, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; his parents; his brothers, Phillip and Arthur; and his sisters, Josie Cipra, Mae Balk, and Rosella Stagman.

A private Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish with Inurnment in Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Military honors will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. A Celebration of Raymond’s Life is being planned for a later date. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Crawford County Veterans Service Office. The Garrity Funeral Home, of Prairie du Chien, is assisting the family.
