“SAY NO FOR NOW”

The topic of frac sand mining in Clayton County drew yet another impassioned crowd for a June 6 meeting of the Say No For Now group at the Garnavillo Community Center. About 50 people, some from within Clayton County and some from other areas, heard from group leaders and shared their own opinions.

Dorothy Zapf

Dorothy J. Zapf, 96, of Littleport, died Sunday, June 5, 2016, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader.

Dorothy was born February 29, 1920, in Alden, Iowa, to Wayne and Cecile Hunter. She graduated from the University of Iowa as a Registered Nurse in 1941. She married Lowell (Soapy) Zapf in Littleport in 1941.

Dorothy had an insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge. She loved to read and discuss world and local events.

Congratulations, Fire Farm - Spotlight shines on Elkader firm

The “belle” of the ball at a recent Las Vegas trade show was a massive, dome-shaped fixture created by Fire Farm, a custom lighting design company in Elkader. Belle earned a “Best New Lighting Award” in the Individual Lamps/Lighting Devices category as well as the grand prize—“Best in Competition,” beating designs shown by nearly 800 companies, including some of the biggest names in the lighting industry.

Members of the Class of 2016 aren’t the only ones who won’t be returning to Central in August when the next school year begins. Longtime counselor Jane Metcalf won’t be there, either. Jane is retiring after 26 years at Central and more than three decades in education.

Amy Lou Hoeger

Amy Lou Hoeger, 66, of Farmersburg, IA, died Tuesday, May 24, 2016. She was born on April 23, 1950, in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd and Myrna Eberhardt. 

Amy attended the Garnavillo School and graduated with the class of 1969. She went above and beyond during her those high school years, as she took classes through Capri College during the summers through high school. She later received her degree from Capri College in Dubuque in 1970. On July 24, 1971, Amy was united in marriage with James Hoeger at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo and together they were blessed with four children. For many years, Amy made a home for her family and also worked as a certified nursing assistant.

Jeffery Alan Werger, age 39, of Garnavillo, IA, died Sunday, June 5, 2016, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital due to injuries sustained in an accident

Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, IA where the family will receive friends from 3-8 p.m., Wednesday, June 8, 2016 and one hour before service at church.  Funeral services will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 9, 2016, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo, IA.
