K-9 Rico gives demonstration

After starting to bite, Rico was commanded to let off. But then, he went back to business, taking the “criminal” to the ground.

Officer Casey Cox and K-9 Rico represented the Prairie du Chien Police Department at the Feb. 9 Pet Expo at Nelson True Value. Rico showed the audience how he would chase and bite a criminal under his handler’s commands. Volunteer Bob Witt wore the bite suit for the demonstration. Cox explained additional details about Rico, his training, his skills and duties, associated expenses and characteristics of the K-9. For more about Rico, find the Prairie du Chien Police K9 Unit on Facebook. The annual Pet Expo featured a pet parade, demonstrations and more. Event-goers learned about the Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter and adopting cats and dogs through the organization, along with how they can volunteer or otherwise assist. New hotel development to offer Mississippi waterfront views

The Waterfront Hotel has taken quick shape over the past month on Main Street in Prairie du Chien. Just Wednesday, passers-by could see the entry corridor taking shape. It will be three stories with 58 rooms and hopefully be open by late July/early August. Since this sign was erected, some modifications have been made to the design. (Photo by Correne Martin)

There’s a new hotel development in downtown Prairie du Chien. Brian and Brittany (Sheckler) Nichols are spearheading the project, called the Waterfront Hotel, fittingly because it overlooks the Mississippi River from its location on Main Street. Despite the awful winter the city has had, construction is moving along and hopes are for it to open in late July or early August, pending weather, Brian said.

There’s a Crush for everyone

Having a crush is a big deal for anyone in high school, especially around Valentine’s Day. The Gay Straight Alliance at Prairie du Chien High School is making sure students have the proper means to spread the love, in a cheeky way, to their friends, secret crushes or special sweethearts. 

The organization sponsored a first-of-its-kind Crush pop fundraiser over the past week as something fun to do for Valentine’s Day, simply to increase awareness about the group and to advocate for diversity and inclusion. The premise is that, from orange to grape to strawberry, there’s a crush for everyone.

PdC school year extended to June 6

The Prairie du Chien School District school year will be extended to June 6 this year in a measure to make up for snow days passed unanimously by the Prairie du Chien School Board at its regular meeting Monday night.

Highland defeated host River Ridge 57-51 in a Six Rivers West boys basketball game Monday afternoon. The game was moved up to 4:30 p.m. due to impending snow.

The Cardinals built a 25-19 lead by halftime. The second half was even, with each team scoring 32 points.

Highland improved to 5-11 overall and 3-6 in the conference. River Ridge is now 5-11 on the season and 3-6 in the Six Rivers West.

Catherine S. Copsey

Catherine S. Copsey, 91, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019, at the Vernon Memorial Hospital. 

She was born July 14, 1927, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Kilian and Sarah (Grover) Michel. She married Milton Copsey on Jan. 22, 1958, at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. Catherine enjoyed gardening and raising small animals. 

Milton preceded her in death on July 31, 2011. 

She is survived by her sons, Kenneth (Althea) and Michael (Ana) Copsey, both of Prairie du Chien; her grandchildren, Dustin, Deanna, Hannah and Aiden; a great-granddaughter, Shelly; and a sister-in-law Alice Michel, of Ferryville.

Bruce W. 'Buzz' Martin

Bruce W. “Buzz” Martin, 59, of Bagley, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, due to complications from congestive heart failure.

Buzz was a lifelong resident of Bagley and a true river rat. He loved to spend lazy days fishing at Bagley Bottoms with friends and family. That love of the river eventually led him to a career as a tugboat pilot for Newt Marine Services in Dubuque, Iowa. He loved his work and the people he worked with, thinking of them as an extension of his family. Buzz was the kind of coworker you wanted to have, always going above and beyond what was asked of him. He was a man whose work ethic could be matched by few.

Buzz was a man with an unquestionable love for his family.

John W. Jambura

John Wayne Jambura passed away on Feb. 2, 2019 in Eugene, Oregon with family by his side.  

He was 87, born on June 20, 1931 in Chippewa Falls, to Earl and Florence (Strauman) Jambura.  John grew up in Prairie du Chien.  He married Phyllis Walnum in Pendleton, Oregon in 1952.  Phyllis passed in 1983 and in 2011 he married Karen Turner a special friend of 25 years.

Slide-off results in citations

On Feb. 8, at approximately 2 a.m., Trevor Ferguson, 26, of Bloomington, was driving his 2009 Hyundai, south on Highway 35 in Patch Grove Township. Ferguson was negotiating a curve and lost control and drove across both lanes of Highway 35, before coming to rest in the opposite ditch. At 5 a.m., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 35, near Kansas Road.

Sweetheart Supper a nice night out to benefit vets memorial

This patriotic, full-size quilt was hand crafted by Suzette Ray, a member of the veterans memorial committee. It will be raffled at the Sweetheart Supper Feb. 16.

The back of the quilt is red, white and blue as well as the front. The quilt is on display at Peoples State Bank in Wauzeka, where tickets are also offered, until Saturday’s supper.

Take your sweetheart out for a steak dinner and some Valentine’s ambience, and contribute to a good cause at the same time, this Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Sweetheart Steak Supper in Wauzeka. 

From 4:30 to 8 p.m., at Century Hall, for the price of one dinner, the Wauzeka Veterans Memorial Committee will serve grilled steak, baked potatoes, buns, hot dogs for kids, homemade salads and desserts, coffee, milk and water. Alcoholic beverages will also be available for purchase. 

Dusty Mara will DJ the fundraiser and Century Hall will be specially decorated for Valentine’s Day. There will also be a raffle for a patriotic-themed, full-size quilt, hand crafted by Suzette Ray, committee leader.
