Minor flooding expected of Kickapoo

 

Due to recent rain, the Kickapoo River is predicted to flood once again, according to the National Weather Service.

The river was at 8.36 feet at 2:05 p.m. on Sept. 19 in Soldiers Grove and is predicted to reach 13.4 feet on Sept. 22. Flood stage at Soldiers Grove is 13 feet.

At 13 feet, flooding of lowland swamps and farmland near the river occurs. At 14 feet, water may begin to flood the park and campground area in the old section of town.

Bagley woman charged with meth possession

A 37-year-old Bagley woman has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of felony bail jumping and one count of possession of methamphetamine.

Alicia Jones faces up to $20,000 in fines and 9.5 years in prison if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, following a traffic stop of Jones, a search revealed a plastic baggie containing meth. Possessing meth would also be a violation of conditions of bond relating to a previous charge.

Local man faces marijuana, meth charges

A 22-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of marijuana (second and subsequent offense), and one count of possession with intent to deliver meth.

Johnathon Haid faces up to $35,000 in fines and 15.5 years in prison if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, Haid admitted to a police officer that he threw a bag containing marijuana and meth on the ground as police officers pulled up in their squad cars. Haid further stated he went to a residence in Prairie du Chien, picked up the meth from an individual and agreed to deliver it to another individual, the complaint said.

Disturbance leads to 3rd offense OWI and more

On Sept. 12, at around 6:20 p.m., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a report of a domestic disturbance at 11461 Horstman Ln. in the township of Wyalusing. 

While en route, deputies learned Lance Lewandowski, 60, of rural Bagley, had left the residence in his vehicle. Deputies were able to locate the vehicle in question and initiated a traffic stop. 

After investigations were complete, Lewandowski was arrested for operating while intoxicated-third offense, domestic disorderly conduct and two valid arrest warrants. Lewandowski was transported to the Grant County Jail.

Boscobel man faces meth charge

A 32-year-old Boscobel man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of meth.

Jacob Larocque faces up to a $10,000 fine and 3.5 years in prison if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, a Prairie du Chien police officer stopped a vehicle in Prairie du Chien near the intersection of Blackhawk Avenue and Wacouta Road. The officer searched the vehicle and discovered a black metal container which contained a quantity of a white powdery residue, which tested positive to the presence of meth.

Reported erratic driver arrested on multiple charges

On Sept. 11, at 10:32 p.m., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a possible impaired driver on County A going west from Cty VV in Bloomington Township. The caller remained behind the vehicle to update the location because he felt the driving was very dangerous. The caller reported the vehicle was driving into the ditch and it struck another vehicle it was passing, in a no passing zone. The caller said the vehicle almost struck an oncoming vehicle head-on because it was left of center on County X. The vehicle almost struck the guardrail going down the hill on County C toward Highway 18. Law enforcement from Crawford County was requested to assist in locating and stopping the vehicle. An officer from the Prairie du Chien Police Department located the vehicle as it crossed the Wisconsin River bridge into Crawford County. The officer stopped the car on Upper Bridgeport Road, just off Highway 18.

Eastman man charged in a marijuana bust

A 54-year-old Eastman man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of the manufacture of marijuana. 

Robert Hodges faces up to a $10,000 fine and 3.5 years in prison if convicted. 

According to the criminal complaint, Hodges admitted to investigators that he had recently returned from California with processed marijuana after investigators had searched is residence. Found in the search were numerous items of contraband, including three live and growing marijuana plants, several containers of harvested and processed marijuana, a number of smoking devices, marijuana seeds and suspected THC wax, the complaint said.

Man accused of burglary to Bible Baptist Church

A 20-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of burglary of a building or dwelling, repeater.

Patrick M. Tesar faces up to a $25,000 fine and 12.5 years in prison if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, Tesar admitted to investigators that he broke into the Bible Baptist Church in Prairie du Chien. A laptop computer, an iPod and a small amount of money were stolen.

FEMA assessments to be conducted in 17 counties

Gov. Scott Walker has announced the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will conduct a preliminary damage assessment (PDA) next week in 17 Wisconsin counties hit hard by flooding and tornadoes. FEMA officials will begin looking at flood-damaged homes and public infrastructure on Sept. 24.

“I look forward to having FEMA in our state next week to assess damages as we take the first step to request a federal disaster declaration,” Walker said.

Anticipated Prairie du Chien cigar factory exhibit in need of information, artifacts

Over the winter, the education committee of the Prairie du Chien Historical Society will construct a new exhibit at Fort Crawford Museum to be unveiled in 2019. It will feature the cigar factories in Prairie du Chien in the mid 1800s through the early 1900s. Committee members have asked historical society members to help gather information and artifacts for this exhibit. While there are a number of wonderful artifacts to use, the committee wonders if there are more out there. 

The committee is especially interested in what is known about:

•the Avia Cigar Factory

•the White Owl Cigar Warehouse
