Traffic stop leads to meth, marijuana arrests

On Feb. 18, the Crawford County K-9 Unit initiated a traffic stop on a 2004 Toyota Highlander in the village of Ferryville. The deputy identified the driver as Thong Vang, 44, Eau Claire, and his passenger Starlene Grant, 29, Merrillan.  

During the course of the traffic stop, the deputy identified indicators of criminal activity along with discovering that the passenger Grant was currently on active bond through Trempealeau County for delivery of methamphetamine less than 3-10 grams, possession with intent to deliver heroin less than 3 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Potosi man arrested for 7th OWI

On Feb. 17 at 12:39 a.m., a Grant County Sheriff’s Department deputy stopped a vehicle for operating left of center in the village of Potosi. 

The driver was identified as Nicholas J. Osterhaus, 46, Potosi. During contact with the driver, it was determined he had consumed alcohol and field sobriety tests were conducted. Nicholas was subsequently arrested for operating while intoxicated (seventh offense). Nicholas was also cited for operating after revocation, operating left of center and operating a vehicle without insurance. 

Nicholas was booked into the Grant County Jail for operating while intoxicated (seventh offense) and a probation hold.

Car goes down embankment, through a fence and hits tree

On Feb. 17 at 6:33 p.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received a report of a one-vehicle traffic crash on Shortcut Road, approximately one-eighth of a mile north of Highway 27 in the township of Seneca. 

Kylie L. Heisz, 17, Gays Mills, was operating a 2006 Ford Taurus northbound on Shortcut Road. Heisz lost control as she was attempting to negotiate a curve. The Heisz vehicle went over the embankment, through a fence and struck a tree with the driver’s side door before coming to rest. 

Heisz was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured. There were no citations issued.

Ferryville community hosting 10th Eagle Day next weekend

The 10th Annual Bald Eagle Watching Day in Ferryville will be Saturday, March 3, at the Village Community Center located on State Highway 35. This program is sponsored by the Ferryville Tourism Council, co-sponsored by Friends of Pool 9 and free to the public.

Wauzeka-Steuben newcomers eliminate school board president in primary

Two newcomers will advance in the Wauzeka-Steuben School Board election, since they received more votes than the incumbent in Tuesday’s primary. 

Mara Hird and Kathleen Schwartz earned 113 votes and 71 votes, respectively, from district residents, edging the board president and three-term board member, Bill Marfilius, from the race, according to unofficial Crawford County results. Now, Hird and Schwartz will challenge one another in April to determine who will fill Marfilius’ seat on the board.

Prairie du Chien Culver’s to close for a month during remodel

Nearly every aspect of Culver's will see a facelift, including the drive-thru for the restaurant, where the overhang and pillars will be replaced by a simpler awning. Along with increased parking space, the flow of the drive-thru will also improve.

Culver’s Restaurant in Prairie du Chien is being completely remodeled. The exterior will have an all-new image, while the interior will be gutted from the menu board through the front of the dining room, and an additional 1,600 square feet will be added. Seating will increase from 98-120 capacity, depending on the season, to 130-200 with the expansion.

Construction began a couple weeks ago. Through most of the rebranding activity, Culver’s will remain open to the public. However, it will close for about a month right after Easter, in April, before reopening, hopefully, by the first week in May.

Former Public Health Head Nurse charged with two counts regarding the dispensing of prescription drugs

The November terminations of two Crawford County Public Health nurses has taken another twist. 

Former Head Nurse Gloria Wall, 69, was charged in Crawford County Circuit Court on Feb. 13, with one count of dispensing a prescription drug without a practitioner’s order, and one count of possession of an illegally obtained prescription. 

Both counts are misdemeanors. Wall faces up to a year in jail and fines totaling $1,000 if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, the investigation into Wall began on Oct. 20, 2017, two days after Wall and nurse Judy Powell were escorted out of the Crawford County Administration Building and placed on paid suspension.
