Dean of Students reports on successful year


Wade Marlow, Dean of Students and At-Risk Coordinator

A new position was created last fall at Clayton Ridge Community School, allowing for the addition of Dean of Students and At Risk Coordinator Wade Marlow to school staff. Marlow assists with the district’s positive behavior intervention support expectations for students, which are that they be ready, respectful, responsible and safe. He models these expectations and provides positive reinforcement for the large majority of students who are meeting expectations.

Donald F. Berns

Donald Francis Berns, 81, of Garnavillo, died Monday, April 9, 2018, at Elkader Care Center in Elkader.

Funeral services were Monday, April 16, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries. Visitation was before services at the funeral home.

Interment was at the Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

Constance “Connie” Sylvester

Constance “Connie” Sylvester, 71, of Elkader, died Thursday, April 5, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Visitation was Monday, April 9, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo and before services at the church.

Funeral services were Tuesday, April 10, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader.

Miner's Creek bridge replacement set to begin

The bridge that crosses Miner's Creek in the Guttenberg city limits is scheduled to be taken down this week in the first step of a bridge replacement project. City officials expect that the bridge will be demolished by Friday, April 13, weather permitting.

The bridge is located on Garber Road just west of Highway 52 at the south Guttenberg city limits.

Five community members look after Guttenberg’s two miles of park bordering the mighty Mississippi. The parks are a hallmark of the city, serving as venues for community events, family gatherings, and places for exercise or rest and relaxation.

Wave of the Future committee continues pool fundraising

The Wave of the Future committee has continued its hard work and bi-weekly meetings following a successful bond referendum on March 6. Grant writing efforts have intensified now that community support has been secured, communication continues with potential in-kind donors for labor and materials, and community members have planned further fundraising events for the project.

William C. Tuecke

William C. "Bill" Tuecke, 78, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday surrounded by his family.

A celebration of life was held on Saturday, April 7, at Veritas Church, Cedar Rapids. Visitation was before services and lunch immediately following.

Bill was born on Dec. 2, 1939, the son of Carl and Ruth (Corson) Tuecke in rural Clayton County, in a log cabin, which still stands today.

Marie Anna (Schmelzer) Dickman died at the Guttenberg Care Center on April 5, 2018.

Visitation was Sunday, April 8, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo and before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, April 9, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Verla Mae Wessel, of Edgewood, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2018, at her home in Edgewood.

Private family services were held at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood, conducted by Pastor Erika Kielstrup.

Interment was Hansel Cemetery, rural Garber.
