Corps seeks public input on mooring sites

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking public input on some potential mooring facilities on the Upper Mississippi River, including a site near Guttenberg.

Mooring facilities are structures in the river that vessels can use to temporarily anchor. There are two types: 

Mooring cell: A circular sheet pile structure usually filled with earth and/or concrete.

Marilyn “Mitz” J. Svestka, 76, of Garnavillo passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024, at the Guttenberg Care Center with her family by her side.

Visitation was Monday, Feb. 26, at Morris Funeral Home in Garnavillo and before services at the church.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 27, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo.

Betty J. Geuder

Betty Jane Geuder, 81, of Guttenberg passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque.

Visitation was Friday, Feb. 23, at Morris Funeral Home in Guttenberg and Saturday before services at the church.

Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 24, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, conducted by Pastor Brent Keller.

Council moves forward on electric rates, water system improvements

Electric rates, a major water system improvement, and library legislation were among the topics discussed at the Feb. 12 meeting of the Guttenberg city council.

Mayor Fred Schaub led council members Mandy Ludovissy, Austin Greve, Jane Parker, Steve Bahls and Michelle Geuder through the two-hour meeting. City Manager Jamie Blume was also at the council table.

Robert “Bob” D. Brown

Robert “Bob” Dean Brown passed away peacefully at home on his beloved farm on Feb. 5, 2024.

Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 10, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Colesburg, conducted by Rev. Philip Agyei and Deacon Paul Dolan. Visitation was before services at the parish center.

Burial was at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Greeley.
