City to consider Country on the River relocation

Festival could move back to St. Feriole Island

Townsquare Live Events Wisconsin has made a request to the city of Prairie du Chien to relocate the Country on the River music festival to St. Feriole Island for 2017. The common council will consider the request at its regular meeting, Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m., at city hall.

Country on the River, currently held in the town of Bridgeport, was first held on St. Feriole Island in 2010 and 2011 before moving to Bridgeport.

According to a letter from Townsquare, the organizers are requesting the relocation due to an easement on the Bridgeport property that will not allow the festival to utilize the entire property in the future, making that location insufficient for space. Townsquare said it was unaware of this issue until recently and was able to obtain a variance to allow the 2016 festival to occur there; however, they have been informed no further variances will be permitted.

New school year, new gymnasium

The process of transitioning from the old 1940s gym to the new one was called “bittersweet” by both Rev. James Weighner and Principal Wade Marlow. (Photo courtesy of the Prairie du Chien Catholic School & Holy Family Parish Facebook page)

While the old gym was infamous to visiting basketball teams for its small size, the new gym is much bigger and more accommodating. “We have a new drop-down screen that we can even use to section off part of the gym,” said Principal Wade Marlow. (Photo by Caitlin Bittner)

This is a first look at the giant, new 3K and day care space. “The 3K and day care are going to be very fluid spaces that teachers can use for the children,” noted Principal Wade Marlow. (Photo by Caitlin Bittner)

Holy Family Parish looks ahead to future

By Caitlin Bittner

As a seven-year project comes to a close, there are a few bittersweet emotions circling Holy Family Parish. Principal Wade Marlow said that the project will “bring the building and school into the 21st century.”

In July, the old gymnasium and day care at St. Gabriel’s school was torn down to make way for the completion of the new school facilities. Once finished, St. Gabriel’s will have a new gym, a new year-round day care, new administrative offices, a new cement pavilion and new landscaping. The Austin and Justin Nolan Memorial Playground will also find itself a new home in the space once occupied by the old gym.

“The building is a gift from the community. The town and parish really stepped up to invest in the school and we, as the administration and faculty, are not going to take it for granted,” said Marlow.
