City to consider Country on the River relocation

Festival could move back to St. Feriole Island

Townsquare Live Events Wisconsin has made a request to the city of Prairie du Chien to relocate the Country on the River music festival to St. Feriole Island for 2017. The common council will consider the request at its regular meeting, Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m., at city hall.

Country on the River, currently held in the town of Bridgeport, was first held on St. Feriole Island in 2010 and 2011 before moving to Bridgeport.

According to a letter from Townsquare, the organizers are requesting the relocation due to an easement on the Bridgeport property that will not allow the festival to utilize the entire property in the future, making that location insufficient for space. Townsquare said it was unaware of this issue until recently and was able to obtain a variance to allow the 2016 festival to occur there; however, they have been informed no further variances will be permitted.

New school year, new gymnasium

Holy Family Parish looks ahead to future

As a seven-year project comes to a close, there are a few bittersweet emotions circling Holy Family Parish. Principal Wade Marlow said that the project will “bring the building and school into the 21st century.”

In July, the old gymnasium and day care at St. Gabriel’s school was torn down to make way for the completion of the new school facilities. Once finished, St. Gabriel’s will have a new gym, a new year-round day care, new administrative offices, a new cement pavilion and new landscaping. The Austin and Justin Nolan Memorial Playground will also find itself a new home in the space once occupied by the old gym.

“The building is a gift from the community. The town and parish really stepped up to invest in the school and we, as the administration and faculty, are not going to take it for granted,” said Marlow.

Friends remember missing woman

Early Wednesday morning, Aug. 3, our beloved friend Virginia Aberle went missing on the Mississippi River. She was an experienced camper on a canoe and camping trip with friends from Chicago. She was last seen on a dock at Wyalusing Beach around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Her fellow campers immediately notified authorities, who were on the scene by 3 a.m. A massive search and rescue effort was coordinated by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, which entailed hundreds of volunteers from over 30 local emergency organizations and fire departments searching both water and land.

Music Fights Back, one punch at a time

On Aug. 27, a gauntlet will be thrown and a battle will begin. From noon to midnight, music will throw a few punches in cancer’s direction thanks to Jeremy Cuff and the Music Fights Back Foundation.
“It started because I had cancer in 2014. I was kind of down in the dumps, and one of the things I would do on the way to treatment was listen to music,” said Cuff. “During that time, I had a lot of people who supported me. This is my way of giving back. And, me being a  musician, I wanted to take music and use it to help people.”

Last year, during the first Music Fights Back event, the group was hoping to raise enough money to donate 10 to 12 iPods to people with cancer. But, due to overwhelming support, the organization was able to raise enough money to purchase and give away 20 iPods.

Car rear ends highway department vehicle

On Monday, Aug. 8, at 8:49 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of an accident in Seneca Township on Highway 171 approximately .7 miles east of Stoney Point Road.   

A 1999 Nissan owned and operated by Haley Dougherty, 28, of La Crosse, was eastbound.

A 2008 Ford F350, pulling an air compressor, owned by the Crawford County Highway Department and operated by county employee Michelle Jones, 48, Mount Sterling, was also eastbound. Jones activated her amber warning lights and stopped to place cautionary traffic warning signs along the highway. Jones saw the approaching Dougherty vehicle and waited in her truck cab for the vehicle to pass. However, the Dougherty vehicle rear ended the county truck and trailer.

The crash’s impact spun the Dougherty vehicle around and it came to rest about 35 feet past the highway department truck, facing west in the westbound lane.

No surprises locally in Primary Election

There were no big surprises in Wisconsin’s Primary Election Tuesday, Aug. 9, and Crawford County tended to follow along with state trends in voting.

On the Democratic side, Congressman Ron Kind slid through to the November ballot with 851 votes from Crawford County electors, though his challenger Myron Buchholz garnered a respectable 169 votes.

In the race for U.S. Senate, incumbent Ron Johnson and former Senator Russ Feingold moved ahead toward a familiar battle in November’s General Election. Unopposed Republican Johnson received 497 votes in Crawford County. The Democrats cast 915 votes for Feingold, while his challenger Scott Harbach recorded 62.

River Response Training

An oil containment boom was deployed Tuesday by personnel from several agencies. The boom is designed to capture oil in the event of an oil spill from a train derailment.

Members of various area agencies as well as people from the private sector were on the river in several boats during training Tuesday.

 

BNSF and CP Rail hold River Response Training in Prairie du Chien

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) and the Canadian Pacific Railroad (CP) sponsored an Upper Mississippi River Response Training exercise on and near the beach on St. Feriole Island on Aug. 8-9.

Woman presumed drowned at the Wyalusing Beach

Official recovery efforts called off, volunteers continue search

Since Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 2:48 a.m., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Bloomington Fire Department, have conducted recovery efforts for a presumed drowning victim in the Mississippi River at Wyalusing Beach. The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Virginia Ann Aberle, of Chicago, Ill.

After four days of recovery efforts, the difficult decision was made to call the search off, Sheriff Nate Dreckman said.

The sheriff’s office is grateful for the many volunteers who spent countless hours searching for Virginia in the Mississippi. Each day of the recovery, there were 10 to 15 boats and jet skis on the water with over 40 volunteers.
