Seneca over Weston, Boland gets 500th win


Seneca boys basketball coach David Boland holds a ball commemorating his 500th career victory following Tuesday night’s win over Weston.

 

Seneca overwhelmed visiting Weston 64-12 in a Ridge and Valley boys basketball game Tuesday night. 

Seneca upped their record to 8-5 on the season and 5-2 in the Ridge and Valley Conference. Weston fell to 0-7.

Seneca Coach David Boland gained his 500th career victory.

Prairie grapplers dominate Dodgeville

On Thursday, Jan. 16, the Prairie du Chien grapplers welcomed SWC foe Dodgeville to town for some wrestling action. Prior to the meet, Parents Night took place, with all wrestlers and cheerleaders being introduced and recognized before a large group of wrestling supporters. In addition, Bradyn Saint and Colten Wall received plaques for their 100th wins and Tyler Hannah for his 150th win. It was also Alumni Night. Dozens of PdC wrestling alumni were recognized. Tom and Cathie Nelson were recognized as “Fans of the Year.” Tom and Cathie can be seen at most all PdC wrestling events. If they aren’t cheering the Hawks on together, it’s because Tom calls a number of the duals for WPRE radio. The Prairie du Chien Color Guard led the National Anthem and the grappling began.

The Prairie du Chien-Fennimore gymnastics team hosted Southwestern-Cuba City-Benton-Darlington on Monday in the team’s final home dual of the season. 

PdC-F also celebrated Senior Night and honored Kylee O’Kane, Hannah Garrity and manager Zach Mara after the meet.

The Prairie du Chien-Fennimore gymnastics team hosted Viroqua on Friday night, Jan. 10 in PdC-F’s first dual of the season. 

The girls pieced together an impressive performance, surpassing their Mt. Horeb Invitational score with a 106.900 for the night.

The Prairie du Chien High School girls basketball team trounced visiting Waukon, Iowa, 62-39, in a Tuesday night nonconference tilt. 

The Lady Hawks improved to 9-2 on the season. They are 3-0 in the SWC.

Prairie has a big game coming up at Platteville on Jan. 9. Platteville is 12-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.

Prairie du Chien traveled to Lancaster for the SWC opener on Thursday, Dec. 19. The #3 ranked team in the state Blackhawks would be victorious over Lancaster by a score of 34-27. The dual started at 113#, where Rhett Koenig would battle Lancaster's returning State Runner up from a year ago. In a tight match, Lancaster would win 8-7. At 120#, Maddox Cejka would work his opponent over with four takedowns and a couple of near fall combinations for a 14-4 major decision. At 126#, Luke Kramer would record a quick first period fall in 1:40. At 132#, Kurt Wall and his Lancaster opponent would be tied 7-7 at the end of regulation before Wall would come up short in sudden victory 9-7. At 138#, Matt Rogge would square off against a returning State Qualifier and win a very workmanlike match 5-0. At 145# Chase Fisher was beat 10-4. At 152# Kurtis Evenson would lose by first period fall. At 160# Traeton Saint would right the ship with a :31 second fall.

River Valley defeated host Prairie du Chien 63-55 in a Southwest Wisconsin Conference boys basketball game Thursday night in the new fieldhouse at Prairie du Chien High School.

River Valley improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the SWC. Prairie fell to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference action.

Second-ranked Wauzeka-Steuben easily handled visiting Pecatonica 69-39 in a nonconference boys basketball game Monday night. 

The Hornets, who are ranked second in the state in Division 5 in two polls, used good play making, shooting and defense to improve to 4-0 overall. They are 2-0 in the Ridge and Valley Conference.

The Hornets built a 33-15 halftime lead en route to the victory.

The #8 ranked Blackhawk grapplers traveled to Wisconsin Dells to wrestle in the Dome on Saturday, Dec. 14 for the 2019 Devils Duals hosted by Adams-Friendship. 

PdC received the 6th seed in the 32-team field. The Blackhawks finished third.  

The field was very deep, with 10 of the 32 teams ranked in the state. In the opening round, PdC would dismantle Wautoma/Wild Rose by a score of 73-6. The Hawks had seven pins and one major decision in the match.
