After a courageous battle with cancer, Walter Long passed away in Apache Junction, Arizona, on February 10, 2015, at the age 75.

Walter was born January 6, 1940, at in Williard’s Hosptal in Manchester, Iowa, to George V. and Ila. M Combs Long. On May 22, 1940, he was baptized at the Congregational Church in Earlville.  On June 12, 1952, he was confirmed in the United Methodist Church at Oneida, IA .  He spent the first 15 years of his life on the family farm and attended Oneida Consolidated Schools.  On January 2, 1955, the family moved to rural  Colesburg where he graduated with the Class of 1957 in the Colesburg School.  He attended Emmanuel Methodist Church of Colesburg.  On July 9, 1960, he was united in marriage with Linda Tenney at Volga United Methodist Church in Volga, the daughter of Hugh A. and Mildred J. Tenney.  They made their home in rural Colesburg where Walter owned a custom shelling business from May 1960 to January 1965 , at which time he went to work for Edgewood Feed Mill.  He worked there until December 30, 1968, when he and his wife, Lind,a purchased a farm in Sperry township on Huett Creek near Strawberry Point, where he still resided at the time of his death.   

 Walter was a life-long lover of horses. He was former president of Manchester Saddle Club and  Iowa Minnesota Stateline Plowing Association. He served on the Central Community School Board, and several different committees and boards in the United Methodist Church.  In 1987, he became a New York Life Insurance Agent.  He continued to sell insurance until the time of his death and enjoyed spending his summers walking through fields adjusting hail claims.  He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their home in Iowa and their winter home in Arizona.

  Walter is survived by his wife, Linda, daughter Lori (Jeff) Robinson of Strawberry Point, son Daniel (Dawn) of Peoria Illinois, daughter Kari (Jim Sullivan) Long of Strawberry Point, son Walter Long of Bondurant, grandchildren Travis, Hallie, Anthony, Sarah, Walter, and Katherine, two sisters, Kathryn and Judy, and a brother, Ed.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Alice Long.

A memorial Service will be held Friday, February 27, at 5 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Strawberry Point with fellowship in the church hall after the service.
