Russell Wayne Wenger, 90, of Elkader, Iowa formerly of Elgin, Iowa died Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, Iowa. Russell was born July 22, 1924, to Charles and Marjorie (Cook) Wenger in Elgin, Iowa, and was baptized at Elgin Methodist Church on September 9, 1934. He graduated from Elgin High School.  In 1943, Russell enlisted in the Navy where he served his country honorably until 1946.

Russell was united in marriage to Avis Mork on December 29, 1951, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa. To this union, three children were born, Steven, Craig and Paul. 

Russell worked construction and owned/operated the Wenger Tavern. He was a rural mail carrier for 35 years. Russell enjoyed golfing, boating on the Mississippi River, bowling in couples’ and men’s leagues in Elkader, Postville and West Union. He also enjoyed taking trips, whether it was a fishing trip with friends or trips with Avis to Alaska, Europe, family vacations to Florida, the Grand Canyon and Seattle’s World’s Fair.  Russell was a member of the American Legion, Rural Mail Carriers Association and Elkader Golf and Country Club. He was also a member of the Elgin Methodist Church from 1924 until 1951, a confirmed member at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church until 1952, became a charter member of Elgin Lutheran Church and maintained his membership until his passing. 

Russell is survived by his loving wife, Avis of 63 years; three children, Steven (Mimi) Wenger of Columbia, Missouri, Craig (Laurie) Wenger of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Paul (Carol) Wenger of Elkader, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Drew Parker and Hunter Wenger of Columbia, Missouri; Christian, Megan, Erik and Jon Wenger of Cedar Rapids; and Tanner and Paige Wenger of Elkader; one sister, Helen Torrens of Cedar Rapids, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marjorie Wenger, and two sisters, Corrine Gilson and Crystal Schori.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Russell’s honor to Elgin American Legion, Elgin Lutheran Church or the Russell Wenger Memorial Fund.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2015, at Elgin Lutheran Church, Elgin, Iowa.  Reverend Jerome Godson will be the officiant. Pallbearers to honor Russell were James Meyer, Jeff Cline, Gary Gilson, Ryan Reese, Tanner Wenger and Christian Wenger.  Honorary pallbearers were Hunter Wenger, Paige Wenger, Megan Wenger, Erik Wenger, Jon Wenger, Drew Parker, and Allison Reese.  

Visitation was held Sunday, April 12, 2015, from 2-5 p.m. at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Elgin, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before services at the church on Monday.   

Interment will be held at the Elgin Cemetery, Elgin, Iowa with Military Honors.
