Don Gerard Henkels, 51, of Monona, Iowa formerly of Garnavillo, Iowa died on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 after a two-year battle with cancer, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader, Iowa. He was born on May 19, 1964, to John and Verna (Althoff) Henkels in McGregor, Iowa. He was baptized on May 31, 1964, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Guttenberg, Iowa, and confirmed on April 4, 1976, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo, Iowa. Don graduated from Garnavillo High School. Don was employed with Innovative Ag Service, Monona Wire and Affordable Improvement. 

Don enjoyed gardening, working on the farm that he shared with his brother, Frank, and spending time with his son, Dakota, who meant the world to him and who provided the strength in him to fight this cancer battle for as long as he did.

Don is survived by his son, Dakota James Henkels of Monona, Iowa; his siblings, Jack Henkels of Gretna, Louisiana, Rose Henkels of Garnavillo, Iowa, Anne (Greg) Kamansky of Rancho Cucamonga, California, Frank (Laurie) Henkels of Monona, Iowa and Joan (Bob) Eulberg of Garnavillo, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Jordan, Taylor, Christine, J.J., Michael, Zack, Mitchell, Kylee, Dan, Jen and Kim.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, John and Verna Henkels; siblings, Gerry Henkels, Joseph Henkels and Marion Henkels.

Visitation was held on Monday, June 8, 2015, from 4-8 p.m. at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa. There was also a one-hour visitation before Mass time at the church on Tuesday.

Mass of Christian burial was at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona with Rev. Daniel Knipper as the celebrant. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery in Garnavillo, Iowa.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa assisted the family with arrangements.
