CMS (Retired) Michael J. Roach, 84, of Elkader, died Saturday, October 3, 2015, at his home. He was born June 10, 1931, in Elkader, to Leo M. and Julia (Quinn) Roach and grew up in rural Elkader. Mike received his education at the rural school where his mother taught and later went to St. Joseph Catholic School, graduating with the class of 1949. As a youth he was active in the Worthwhile 4-H Club and baseball and high school basketball. He attended college for 2½ years. He served in the Iowa National Guard for 1½ years before he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952, where he proudly served his country for more than 28 years. He served two tours of duty in Japan and two tours in Korea along with many other bases throughout the years.

Mike was united in marriage to Patricia A. Bergan on September 15, 1956, at Edwards Air Force Base, in California. Four children were born to this union. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1980, where he had earned the rank of Chief Master Sergeant (E-9). After retirement, he worked as St Joseph’s Church for 15 years before retiring completely. Mike was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader and the local Lemka-Stendel American Legion Post #106 in Elkader. Mike and Pat enjoyed spending many winters in Florida. He enjoyed playing cards with family and visiting his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Patricia of Elkader; daughter, Janet (Douglas) Whittle of Watertown, WI, daughter, Anita (Kevin) Potter of Washington, IL, daughter, Teresa (John) Schneider of Hortonville, WI; six grandsons, Jason Whittle, Andrew Whittle, Jacob Whittle, Daniel Potter, Nicholas Schneider, Matthew Schneider and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law plus many nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Michael, in 1981.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 10, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader. Inurnment with military honors followed St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Elkader. Visitation was from 9 a.m. until mass time at the church on Saturday.
