Beers, Hall advance to
the state wrestling meet
Richland Center played host to one of the four WIAA Division 2 Sectional Wrestling Tournaments on Saturday, Feb. 20. Prairie du Chien was represented by four individuals (Clayton Beers 120#, Nick Rogge 132#, Stephen Ronnfeldt 182# and Peyton Hall 195#) who advanced from the River Valley Regional the week before. There are eight-man brackets and the top three place winners qualify for the state tournament in Madison, Thursday, Feb. 25 through Saturday, Feb. 27.
Clayton Beers (Sr.) 120#: In the quarterfinal match, Beers pinned Platt (Wisconsin Dells) in the first period (1:40). In the semifinals, Beers won an 8-2 decision over Langer (Marshall). In the finals, Beers was defeated by Bahr (West Salem/Bangor) 8-6. Beers finished second to earn his second trip to the state tournament.
Nick Rogge (Soph.) 132#: In the quarterfinal match, Rogge was defeated by eventual sectional champion Kicmol (Evansville/Albany) by fall in 3:03. In the consolation semifinal, Rogge was defeated by Hannah (Viroqua) by major decision, 11-0. Rogge ended his season with a 27-10 record.
Stephen Ronnfeldt (Soph.) 182#: In the quarterfinal match, Ronnfeldt was defeated by Ringhand (Evansville/Albany) by a score of 5-2. Ronnfeldt ends his season with a 30-9 record.
Peyton Hall (Sr.) 195#: In the quarterfinal match, Hall defeated Jarzynski (Wisconsin Dells) by a score of 10-3. In the semifinals, Hall was beaten by the eventual sectional champion Rinehart (Evansville/Albany) 6-1. In the consolation semifinals, Hall beat Graham (RFRC) by major decision, 11-1. In the consolation championship, Hall pinned Chadwick (Marshall) in 5:29. In the wrestleback for true second, Hall fell to Arneson (Monroe) 4-0 to finish third and earn his first trip to the State Tournament.
Beers and Hall will wrestle Thursday evening at the Kohl Center in the preliminary round of the WIAA State Tournament. This round begins at 7:15 p.m. Beers’ opening opponent will be Bennett Temple (Seymour). Temple is a senior with a 36-9 record. Hall will open with Matt Vanden Heuvel (Denmark). Vanden Heuvel is a senior with a 35-8 record. Should either of these young men win Thursday, they will wrestle in Friday’s quarterfinals that start at 11:15 a.m.
