The bed races are one of the most popular aspects of the Mar-Mac Friends Helping Friends Winter Triathlon and Benefit. This year’s event will take place Friday and Saturday, March 4-5. (North Iowa Times file photo)

Mar-Mac Friends Helping Friends will have its 12th annual Winter Triathlon and Benefit on Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5, in McGregor. This year’s proceeds will benefit Sue Krugger and Mike Kricke, who are both battling cancer. Both individuals are very well-known; Sue worked for many years at the Riverview and Mike has been with the band Mama’s Worry since 1978.

On Friday, March 4, there will be bar bingo at Pocket City Pub beginning at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, March 5, the day starts with a bake sale at the Riverview at 9 a.m. If you would like to donate baked goods, please call Donna Staples at (563) 873-2713, or just drop items off at the Riverview beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The baked sale is followed, at 10 a.m., by the bed parade going down the 100 and 200 blocks of Main Street. The triathlon begins immediately following the parade. That consists of bed races, turkey bowling and basketball toss. People are encouraged to put together a five-person team and join the fun; beds are available for those who do not have one. For more information, call Cathy at (563) 873-3816.

The hog roast begins at 11 a.m. at the Riverview and consists of pork, potato salad, cheesy potatoes, coleslaw, beans and a roll.

Local bars will host several tournaments in the afternoon. There will be pool at Josie’s River Queen, bowling at Pocket City Pub and euchre at Latino’s. All tournaments begin at noon. Call those establishments for more details.

The raffle and auction begins at 5 p.m. at the Riverview. Some awesome raffle items are available again this year. People are also welcome to donate new items, which can be dropped off at Cathy’s Office, 218 Main St., McGregor.

There is also a special treat for everyone this year. On Saturday, March 12, at Josie’s River Queen, Mama’s Worry will play, beginning at 7 p.m. T-shirts can be purchased at the River Queen.

All the proceeds from all of the events will go to Sue and Mike to help with medical expenses.

Any monetary donations can be made out to Mar-Mac Friends Helping Friends and either dropped off or mailed to Cathy’s Office, P.O. Box 371, 218 Main St., McGregor, IA 52157. If you would like to donate to a particular person, please make a note on the check.

If you have any questions about the benefit, call Cathy at (563) 873-3816.

A very small group puts on these events, and more individuals are always welcome to join. The group works really hard at these events, but also has a lot of fun. Any contribution is appreciated.
