Chase Harville

By Ted Pennekamp

During a status conference on April 1 in Crawford County Circuit Court, trial dates of Aug. 17-19 were set for Chase Harville who is charged with first degree reckless homicide in the death of  3-year-old boy last July.

A pre-trial conference has been scheduled for Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. Any motions filed by District Attorney Luke Steiner or defense attorney Jeremiah Meyer-O’Day could be heard on Aug. 3 as well.

Proposed jury instructions need to be ready by Aug. 3, and jury selection will be held on Aug. 17 at 9 a.m.

Harville, 30, of Prairie du Chien, has been charged with first degree reckless homicide, with a repeater modifier, in the July 10, 2020 death of a 3-year-old town of Eastman boy. The boy was under Harville’s care at a residence at 61906 County N in Eastman Township north of Prairie du Chien.

Harville faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted. Furthermore, Harville faces up to six more years in prison if convicted as a repeat offender because of a previous conviction in 2015 for child abuse-intentionally causing harm. Harville was sentenced to two years in prison and three years of extended supervision because of his 2015 conviction.

Two other cases

Harville is also charged in two cases that are separate from the reckless homicide case. A status conference on those cases is also scheduled for Aug. 3 at 10 a.m.

In one case, Harville is charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia for incidents that occurred on or about May 15, 2020. Harville faces up to a total of $25,500 in fines and 10 years and 30 days in prison if convicted of both of these counts.

In another case, Harville is charged with misdemeanor battery, with a modifier of domestic abuse for an incident that occurred on or about May 27, 2020. If Harville is convicted, he faces up to nine months in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Harville is being held in the Oneida County Jail in Rhinelander.
