She was born on Sept. 1, 1945, at the family farm near Littleport, the daughter of Melvin and Arleene (Gentz) Hakert. Carol attended grade school in Strawberry Point and graduated in 1964 from Central High School in Elkader.

Following graduation, Carol worked in Guttenberg at Meuters. She met her husband-to-be, Jess Jarman, in Communia at a wedding dance in October 1964. On Dec. 26, 1964, Carol and Jess were married at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport. Two daughters were born to this union.

The family lived near Elkader, moved to Parnell and then returned to Strawberry Point in 1973, where Carol and Jess made their home for 48 years. Carol worked for Doc O’Donnell’s veterinary office in Strawberry Point and Dura Manufacturing in West Union. She also helped run a family-owned redemption center business.

Carol was in a square dancing club and a bowling league, as she loved both activities. She also loved gardening, watching Hallmark movies and attending garage sales with special friends, Susie and Arda. Most of all, Carol enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, who were her pride and joy.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 56 years, Jess Jarman of Edgewood; her two daughters, Sheri (Jeff Sylvester) Refle of Goodyear, Ariz., and Sandi (Steve) Barton of Strawberry Point; six grandchildren, Elisha (Joe) Phelps, Allan Brown, Amber (Michael Kula) Brown, Chance Barton, Brandon (Lindsey) Barton and Sydney (Logan) Davis; eight great-grandchildren, Christian, Madelyn, Brandon, Colton, Kaidyn, Aliyah, Owen and Declan; one sister, Shirley (Ray) Horns of Tomah, Wis.; and six nieces and nephews, Melissa (Nick) Fettkether, Michael (Amy) Horns, Matthew (Amy) Horns, Kevin (Brooke) Hakert, Andy (Jenni) Hakert and Amanda Hakert.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin Hakert (Nov. 12, 2004) and Arleene (Gentz) Hakert (Sept. 15, 2010); one brother, Donald Hakert (June 14, 2007); and one son-in-law, Jan Refle (Sept. 2, 2009).
