Leonard A. “Lennie” Thein
Leonard A. “Lennie” Thein, 86, of Garnavillo, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021, in his home.
Lennie was born June 2, 1935, in Garnavillo, the son of Arthur and Irene (Tuecke) Thein. He was a graduate of Garnavillo High School. From 1958-1961 he served as a Specialist in the United States Army Corps, with some time spent in Korea.
Lennie married Shirley Helle on Sept. 2, 1961, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo. Lennie enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, and spending time with family. After retiring from Scherrman’s Implement, Dyersville, of 20 years, Lennie worked on his home computer, developing a small online business through eBay.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Shirley; children, Barbara (Thomas) McGreal of Mitchellville, Steven (Carla) Thein of Owatonna, Minn., Mark (Deanna) Thein of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; in-laws, Wilma Mensen of Dyersville, Jerry (JoAnn) Cox of Champaign, Ill., Betty Helle of Des Moines, David (Leslee) Helle of Cedar Rapids and Wayne (Kathy) Helle of Garnavillo.
Lennie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Forrest, Melvin, and Richard; parents-in-law, Joseph and Ardella Helle; brothers-in-law, Joseph and Louis Helle, Dale Mensen; sisters-in-law, Janell Thein, Mary Lou Thein, Fay Thein, and Peggy Helle; nephew, James Thein and niece, Shirley Buhrow.
Memorials may be directed to St. Croix Hospice, Strawberry Point, and St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo.
