A day for families is planned to raise money to help those dealing with Alzheimer’s and dementia in Crawford County. The annual Alzheimer’s Walk, a new Aces for Alzheimer’s Tennis Tournament, and a Chicken Q will be at Hoffman Hall in Prairie du Chien, Saturday, Oct. 2.

Beginning promptly at 8 a.m. will be the tennis tournament on the rec center’s newly-topped tennis courts. Teams of two are encouraged to pre-register by the morning of Sept. 30, by calling 326-2985. Each team is guaranteed two matches and two Chicken Q tickets to be used that day. Balls and water jugs will be provided; just bring a racquet and a partner. The tournament winners will take home a trophy.

Also at 8 a.m., registration and team photos will begin for the Crawford County Alzheimer’s Walk. The one-mile walk and 5K run will begin at 9 a.m. sharp, in person starting at Hoffman Hall, or virtually for those who wish to stay socially-distanced. No team will be too small, so bring along your family and friends, coworkers, neighbors and loved ones. Register in advance at alzwisc.org. An awards ceremony will follow the walk/run around 10 a.m. All funds raised by this event will be kept right in the county to benefit people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia and their families.

Additionally, a Chicken Q dinner, provided by Rooster Andy’s, will take place on site, also for the same cause. The meal includes a half-chicken, baked beans, potato salad and a roll. Pre-orders of the meal are encouraged at Hoffman Hall or by contacting Heather Moore at (608) 723-4288.

The burden of dementia and Alzheimer’s is large and growing. It’s estimated that more than 120,000 Wisconsin residents have some form of dementia. By the year 2040, that number may be closer to 240,000.

The Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin’s role is to provide information, emotional support, and a trusted guide, free of charge, to those living with memory loss and dementia and their families. Help is there for individuals, their care partners and families as they navigate a maze of issues.

ADAW staff guide, educate, support, and advocate for people living with dementia and for those supporting them. The alliance’s reach includes counties in south-central and southwestern Wisconsin. All donations remain local for those who need it most.
