Richard (Dick) John Wessels, 71, formerly of McGregor, passed away Dec. 24, 2021, after a two-year battle with lung cancer. Born to Leonette and Lavern Wessels in Manchester, Dick spent almost his entire life in northeast Iowa until retiring with his wife, Kathy, to Oro Valley, Ariz., in 2018. Dick graduated from MFL High School in 1968, and married Kathy Louise Halliwill on May 24, 1975. Dick served for the U.S. Army as a sergeant on the front lines of the Vietnam War. Following his time in the military, Dick farmed with Kathy in northeast Iowa and eventually settled into his career as a construction foreman building bridges and culverts throughout Iowa.

Dick loved fishing (with the Mississippi River and northern Minnesota being his favorite spots), golf (especially with his brothers and friends, and if it involved a skins bet), woodworking and road trips with Kathy to different parts of the country.  He was a passionate (and tortured) Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Bears fan. Dick loved his chocolate lab Jade and spending time with his brother Tom. He was very proud of his kids and grandkids and would often brag about their accomplishments.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Kathy; his children, Jeremy Wessels (New York City, N.Y.), Emily (Steve) Bayton (Denver, Colo.), and Holly (James) Lee (Chicago, Ill.); his grandkids, Jack, Josephine, Julia and Emmett; and his siblings, Wayne (Sue) Wessels, Ron (Theresa) Wessels, Tom (Glenice Varley) Wessels and Betty (Jeff) Heins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leonette and LaVern Wessels.

A funeral service for the family is planned for Jan. 12, at the Oro Valley United Church of Christ in Oro Valley, Ariz., with a larger memorial service scheduled for June 25 in northeast Iowa, at a location to be determined.

The family would like to express sincere thanks for the outpouring of love and support.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorial donations may be made to the Oro Valley United Church of Christ, 1401 E. El Conquistador Way, Oro Valley, AZ 85704, or to another charity near and dear to your heart.
