The Central girls track and field team had a tough outing at the West Delaware Invite this past week, finishing in 11th place with 15 points. Although not the finish the Warriors hoped for, team members still set 16 personal records and 14 season bests, demonstrating immense effort and improvement.

Jaydin Dettman led the scoring with 7.25 points, while Hannah Asche totaled 3.5 and Grace Kuehl 2.225.

Kuehl scored one of her points with a sixth place finish in the 100 meter dash, running the race in a season best time of 13.78 seconds, less than a second behind the winning time of 12.84. Warrior teammate Caitlyn Druecker finished 28th.

Asche secured a top-five finish in the 200, running a personal record 27.69, and Brooklyn Amsden finished 28th.

Dettman earned six more points with a third place finish in the 400, in a PR time of 1:02.30, while Staci Herman crossed the line 19th.

Delaney Scherf topped all Warrior runners in the 800 meter run with her ninth place finish and season best time of 2:36.46, and Keely Curran was 25th. Coral Rork ran to 20th in the 1500 and Katelyn Scherf placed 22nd, with both setting personal best times.

Both Warrior runners in the 100-meter hurdles finished outside the top-15, with Reese Berns coming in 20th and Madylen Gregerson 24th. However, in the 400-meter hurdles, the Warriors had two top-10 runners in Kaitlyn Wiley and Taylor Moser, who finished ninth and 10th, respectively.

In the field events, Loan added a top-10 finish in the long jump, placing ninth, while Gracie Cummer jumped her way to 20th. Loan also came away with an 11 place effort in the high jump, and Tessa Sylvester took 19th. Aly Feickert placed 19th in the discus and Macie Winters was 30th. Delaney Scherf had the best shot put for the Warriors, finishing 20th, with Feickert close behind in 23rd.

The Warriors rebounded in the relays, adding a sixth place finish in the 4x100 with the group of Tori Sylvester, Kuehl, Haley Mueller and Asche, who ran a season best 53.96.

Central crossed 14th in the 4x200, but the team got back into the top-10 in the 4x400 as Dettman, Scherf, Wiley and Asche ran to sixth place.

The Warriors just missed out on the top-10 in the 4x800, finishing 11th, but produced a seventh place effort in the 400-meter shuttle hurdle relay with Loan, Cummer, Moser and Wiley.

Their best finish came in the 800-sprint medley, with Tori Sylvester, Kuehl, Asche and Dettman running to fourth with a time of 1:56.29. In the 1600-distance medley, Wiley, Tori Sylvester, Scherf and Moser added a seventh place mark.

“The glorious weather finally allowed us to compete in near perfect conditions, and the girls took advantage. I think the frustration of having had only one meet since March 25 also made the girls very hungry to compete,” said coach Martha Bauder. “All the PRs and season bests show their effort level. One of the biggest season bests would have been the varsity 4x400 of Dettman, Scherf, Wiley and Asche, who cut nearly 10 seconds off their previous best and jumped into the top spot so far in the state in class 1A.”

The Warriors next competed at the North Fayette Valley Invitational, which they added to the schedule to “get another chance to compete,” according to coach Bauder. The team came away with a better result, finishing seventh and scoring 44 points.

Loan just missed out on points with a seventh place finish in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 6 inches, while teammate Brooke Tieden finished a close eighth. Loan did score four points in the long jump, however, claiming fourth with a mark of 14 feet, 2.5 inches. Cummer jumping to 12th place.

Feickert was the top-finishing Warrior in the shot put, in eighth place, while Gregerson came in 15th. Feickert added 10th place in the discus as well.

The sprints included Mueller finishing seventh in the 100 meter dash, followed by Kimberly Suhr in 10th. In the 200, Moser and Eva Embretson placed a respective ninth and 10th, while a pair of sophomores in Amsden and Druecker finished 11th and 13th.

Embretson also ran the 1500, finishing 12th, and Loan competed her way to fourth in the 100 hurdles.

It was in the relays where the Warriors once again shined. In the 800-sprint medley relay, Mueller, Tessa Sylvester, Kuehl and Tori Sylvester finished fifth, and in the 400-meter shuttle hurdle event, Cummer, Moser, Wiley and Loan came in second. The Warriors added a third place finish in the 4x800 with Embretson, Alexis Thiese, Rork and Curran.

It was a disappointing seventh place in the 4x100, but Central rebounded to win the 4x200 with Dettman, Scherf, Wiley and Asche, who won the race by over four seconds. The Warriors also won the 4x400 with that same group, winning the relay by over 15 seconds.

“The North Fayette Valley meet on Friday was unfortunately not as glorious. The weather slipped back into what most of the season has been, but we did our best to compete and make improvements. We only have had five personal records and three season bests, but many girls had an opportunity to compete in more events than usual, so were able to try some new events,” Bauder said.

The Warriors’ schedule now includes a meet at Waukon on April 26, then at MFL MarMac April 28.
