The Central boys track and field team continues to improve with each passing week, as they try to secure more top-five team finishes.

The Warriors came close last week, with a sixth place mark at the MFL MarMac Invitational and seventh at the Upper Iowa Conference meet in Postville, scoring over 45 points at each event.

Beginning with the MFL MarMac Invitational, the Warriors had a rough trip in the 100-meter dash, with Ryan Schroeder’s 11th place time a team best. Sam Fettkether ran 13th and Carter Krugger finished 17th.

The 200 was a different story, as Corey Weber finished fifth in 25.83 seconds, a little over two seconds out of first place. Schroeder finished the race in 11th.

Two Warriors, Jack Scherf and Vaughn Zittergruen, produced top-10 finishes in the 400, with Scherf crossing in sixth, just ahead of Zittergruen in seventh.

The hurdles were also a source of success, first with Sean Wilwert’s second place finish in the 110 meter hurdles, followed by William Moser’s running second in the 400 hurdles. Brayden Finley ran fourth in that event.

The distance races were highlighted by several top finishes, as Scherf ran to fifth in the 800, Zittergruen finished third in the 1600 and Gavin Holst held off a late charge by Landan Folkedahl to secure the victory in the 3200.

In the field events, the Warriors put together a series of quality finishes, led by Schroeder, who placed fourth in the discus and eighth in the shot put. Two other Warriors, Fettkether and Kale Doeppke, finished inside the top 10 in the discus, while Dan McGreal came in 14th. In the shot put, Doeppke and Fettkether finished 11th and 12th, respectively. Krugger added a ninth place effort in the long jump.

The Warriors finished third in three relays, including the 4x100, 4x400 and 800 sprint medley. They capped off the day with a fourth place finish in the 1600 distance medley relay.

Central next took part in the Upper Iowa Conference meet, placing seventh and scoring 48 points, but the results indicate a team on the rise after early season setbacks due to weather and injuries.

The sprint races had several top-10 finishes, starting in the 100, where Wilwert claimed seventh. Logan Sharpe ran the race 10th.

Evan Schroeder finished seventh in the 200, while Weber was 11th.

Wilwert returned in the 110 meter hurdles, taking third place and scoring six points, while Moser finished fourth in the 400 meter hurdles, followed by Finley in ninth.

The distance races were once again highlighted by Holst, who ran the 800 and 3200. Holst finished eighth in the 800, ahead of teammate Maddux Eglseder in 14th. In the 3200, Holst was third.

In the 1600, the Warriors came away with a 12th place finish from Zittergruen and 14th from Eglseder.

The field events saw some success from the Warriors. In the shot put, Evan Schroeder led the team with a seventh place throw, followed by Ryan Schroeder in 11th. Ryan Schroeder also finished 12th in the discus, and Fettkether’s mark was good enough for 15th. Additionally, Sharpe posted a seventh place distance in the long jump.

Central scored a significant amount of points in the relays, starting with sixth place in the 4x100, which earned three points. The 4x200  team of Sharpe, Ryan Schroeder, Doeppke and Finley finished fifth for four points, while Weber, Holst, Moser and Scherf combined for fifth in the 4x400, adding four more points.

The Warriors accumulated three more points when Eglseder, Krugger, Zittergruen and Scherf finished sixth in the 4x800. The team also scored eight points combined in the medley races, with a pair of fifth place finishes in the 800 sprint medley and 1600 distance medley.

The season continues at the district meet on Thursday, May 12, at Edgewood-Colesburg.
