Umbrella Arts (UA) Outdoor Musical Instrument (OMI) project has been approved by the Guttenberg City Council, Park Board, and OMI Advisory Group. The project is spearheaded by UA members Vicki Rodenberg, Becky Shaffer and Juanita Loven, and Ingleside representative and OMI project chair Jane Staebler.

Staebler was inspired by an interactive musical instrument display on Lake Okoboji. She envisioned a similar set of instruments in Ingleside Park overlooking the Mississippi River. She approached Loven, who encouraged her to head a local campaign.

The ambitious arts group will place an ensemble of six instruments in the park across the street from Joe's Pizza located in the 600 block of South River Park Drive.

UA will order the instruments once grant money is secured in July.

Grant money awarded to date:

•Clayton County Foundation for the Future - $650 received

•Foundation of Cornerstone Communities - $1,000 awarded

•Alpine Communications - $300 awarded, totaling $1950.

Grant money applied for:

•Upper Mississippi Gaming Commission - $25,200, requires 40% match.

•Dubuque Racing Association - $10,000.

The Outdoor Musical Instrument advisory group and Umbrella Arts members would like to thank City Manager Denise Schneider for commandeering the grant writing process.

Pledged to date:

•Ingleside Club - $500

•Umbrella Arts - $5,000

•Eagles Auxiliary - $100

•Guttenberg Motel - $1000

• Richard and Gail Larson Fund - $2,000

• Eagles Men will sponsor a fish fry in July with proceeds going toward the project.

Memorials/donations

A Contrabass Chimes, Duet, Harp and Imbarimba, with a cost of $4,000 - $6000 each, are already sponsored and paid for in full. Yet to be sponsored, or paid for by donations, are the Pegasus and Swirl.

The FreeNotes order for a six-instrument ensemble costs $39,000, including surcharge, freight and tax, and would ship within 2-3 weeks.

The Outdoor Musical Instrument Advisory committee welcomes all monetary donations toward the community project. "If community interest continues, a phase two project may be considered with a possible children's ensemble," say organizers.

Checks can be mailed to Umbrella Arts, P.O. Box 610 Guttenberg, IA 52052.

A "thank you" letter, including tax-exempt status, will be mailed to each donor, and his or her name will be kept on file.
