The MFL MarMac boys and girls cross country teams competed in meets at Clayton Ridge and North Fayette Valley last week.
Sophomore Jacob Schellhorn continued his string of success, placing second in both races. With those results, he’s yet to finish outside the top two in four meets this season.
Schellhorn turned in a time of 17:42 in Guttenberg on Sept. 6, just two seconds behind Clayton Ridge’s Keaton Reimer. Another Bulldog, Tucker Ruff, also placed within the top 20, crossing the line 18th at 21:05. Sawyer Keehner returned from injury to finish 25th with a time of 21:33, and Logan Ross came in 52nd at 28:47.
The short-handed Bulldogs were unable to field a team score. Clayton Ridge took the top spot with a total of 44, just edging Maquoketa Valley’s 47.
In the Sept. 8 meet at North Fayette Valley, Schellhorn improved his time to 17:32, but it was a bit behind Oelwein’s Conall Sauser, who came in at 17:24. Will Koether was the next MFL MarMac finisher, running in 20:44 for 30th place. Keehner followed in 39th, with a mark of 21:30, while Ross shaved over two minutes off his previous time to place 82nd.
The Bulldogs were again unable to post a team score in a field that included 10 teams. With five runners in the top 10, Oelwein easily won the meet with a score of 25. Clayton Ridge placed second at 88.
MFL MarMac’s girls also performed well in last week’s races, including a fourth place team finish at Guttenberg. The Bulldogs tallied a score of 111, behind Beckman (28), Sumner-Fredericksburg (45) and Central (76).
Cora Keehner led the effort with a time of 23:41, which was good for 14th. Evelyn Ruff was close behind in 16th, after crossing in 24:38, while Clare Grau finished 25th at 25:45. Emma Koether’s 27:19 put her in 35th and Kaylee Nuehring turned in a strong 41st place time of 27:58. Mariah Moser and Cadence Weber rounded out the Bulldog competitors in 45th and 62nd, respectively.
Keehner continued to shine at NFV, lowering her time to 23:06 and placing eighth among over 100 runners. Next up was Ruff, who was 30th with a time of 25:47, followed by Koether in 41st at 26:52. Moser crossed the line in 28:16, for 59th place, while Nuehring was 68th at 28:47 and Weber was 88th at 30:53.
The Bulldogs’ score of 172 put them seventh as a team. NFV narrowly beat Jesup 64 versus 66, to place first.
MFL MarMac will compete twice this week: at Starmont on, Sept. 13, then at Elkader on Sept. 15.
