Commercial Vehicle Group (CVG) announced that it plans to permanently close its Monona facility.

In a statement, CVG said, “While the long-term outlooks are favorable for both ecommerce market growth and the warehouse automation market, the outlook over the foreseeable future is for a continued much-smaller business size.”

“We have made the difficult but necessary decision to address this reality and right-size our entire Warehouse Automation Business Unit. We are permanently closing the Monona facility and reducing our warehouse automation footprint. We have implemented similar cost rightsizing actions at our other facilities,” the release continued.

CVG said it sympathizes with those affected by the actions in Monona. The company is offering severance packages and additional assistance through Iowa Workforce Development.

CVG’s roots in Monona date back to 1969, when Monona Wire opened. CVG purchased Monona Wire in 2005, and planned to close the facility back in 2017, but later reversed the decision. The manufacturer transitioned from making wire harnesses to building conveyor systems in 2020.

According to CVG’s chief human resources officer Kristin Mathers, the Monona facility currently employs around 50 people. She anticipates full closure of the facility by the middle of quarter one in 2023.
