PdC-RR-S controlled the ball at the Driftless United end for much of the match.

The Prairie du Chien-River Ridge-Seneca soccer team earned its first victory of the season at John C. Mulrooney Field against visiting Driftless United Futbol by a score of 2-0 much to the delight of the team and their fans.

Garrett DeHart and Noah Pedretti both scored first-half goals for the victory.

The win was special for other reasons as well because Trystan Nesvold was cleared to play in his first match this season. Numerous fans, players, coaches and other personnel donned white shirts before the match in support of Trystan who was thought to have cancer but was medically cleared to play in Friday’s contest.

The shirts named the type of cancer and said, “One in 2 million,” in support of Trystan, who held a team meeting before the match to tell the team he was going to play.

“The kids were really fired up,” said Lori Hanson, the mother of Alex Lee, a teammate of Trystan. “Trystan being able to play, put the icing on the cake.”

Also aiding the team was the fact that Aiden Toberman came back from a foot injury to play in the match after having been out for much of the season, and so the team was at full strength.

Prairie du Chien’s football game with Montello was cancelled, and several football players came to the soccer match to show their support as well. The Hawkettes performed at halftime and the high school band drumline was there throughout the match as well.

During the opening moments of the match, Trystan booted a high, curving kick from about 60 yards out that nearly scored. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced back. A Blackhawk player immediately pounded the ball into the goal, touching off a celebration. The goal didn’t count, however, because PdC-RR-S was called for being offside.

All’s well that ends well, however, and Prairie went on to win the match.

“This match was significant because Trystan and Aiden were able to play,” said PdC-RR-S Coach Lara Czajkowski Higgins. “We finally had a full crew, plus it was senior night. The support from the community was tremendous for the team and for Trystan with people coming from as far away as La Crosse and Spring Green. It was fantastic.”

PdC-RR-S improved to 1-14 on the season. Driftless United dropped to 2-5-2 overall.
