The MFL MarMac girls basketball team picked up its first wins of the season last week—one an overtime thriller over Waukon and the other a double-digit conference victory at Kee.

The Bulldogs topped the Indians 73-70 in double overtime Nov. 28. A tight battle left the score knotted 60-60 at the end of regulation, and both teams netted just four points apiece in the first overtime, sending the game to another period. That’s where MFL MarMac gained a 9-6 edge, winning its first game against Waukon since 2018.

MFL MarMac had a slightly higher field goal percentage—and made one more three-point shot—than the Indians, but it was from the free throw line where the team had a major advantage. The Bulldogs took twice as many attempts, making 17 free throws to Waukon’s nine.

The Bulldogs also won the rebounding battle, 46-31, including 30 on the defensive end that limited the Indians’ second chance scoring opportunities.

Caydence Moon had a stellar shooting night for MFL MarMac, including a 5-7 clip from behind the arc. Along with 17 points, she racked up six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Hannah Bogdonovich also chipped in 17 points along with nine rebounds and six assists. Grace Anderson totaled 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block, while Ashley Shaw’s 10 points made her the fourth Bulldog to score in double digits. She secured a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds.

MFL MarMac added to its win total Dec. 2, taking down Kee 53-42. Roughly half those points—26—were courtesy of Anderson, who also tied for a team-high eight rebounds.

Brooklynn Moon’s stat line included eight points, three steals, two rebounds and an assist, while Bogdonovich finished with six points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block. Kaitlin Picha added five points, three assists and two steals.

The 2-1 Bulldogs have a busy four-game schedule this week. They took on Edgewood-Colesburg Dec. 5 and Turkey Valley Dec. 6. They’ll travel to Postville Dec. 9, before playing Kingsland in the Border Battle at Luther College on Dec. 10.
