The Guttenberg Fire Department said there are no signs of foul play at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.

Investigation continues into a structure fire that destroyed a Guttenberg group home on Dec. 1.

According to a press release, the Guttenberg Fire Department was dispatched to 523 N. Second St., at 8:33 p.m., for a fully involved structure fire with people possibly still inside.

Upon arrival of the first fire personnel, it was determined there was smoke and fire coming from the south end of a group home assisted living residence. Firefighters were advised five individuals lived there, and staff had not accounted for all of them yet.

As resources were sent to help locate the missing individuals, a fire attack team was also established. Within minutes, four of the missing individuals were located outside the building and attended to by EMS. The fifth individual was located by firefighters inside the structure and assisted to EMS for treatment. All five residents were transported to the Guttenberg Hospital for evaluation and treatment for any injuries.

The press release said an initial investigation was started once there was better visibility inside the structure and the fire was knocked down. The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office was contacted to assist with the investigation.

The fire department cleared the scene at 1:30 a.m. However, the department returned to the site at 2 a.m. for some hot spots and fire flare ups and to make sure all fires were extinguished.

The department advised there are no obvious signs of foul play at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.

The Guttenberg Fire Department was assisted by the Garnavillo and Garber fire departments, Guttenberg Ambulance, Garnavillo EMS, Clayton County Sheriff’s Department, Guttenberg Police Department and Iowa State Fire Marshals.
