The MFL MarMac girls basketball team went 2-2 last week, scoring victories over Edgewood-Colesburg and Postville but losing tight games to Turkey Valley and Kingsland.

The Bulldogs defeated Ed-Co 69-66 on Dec. 5, in their second overtime victory of the past week. They held a 46-38 edge over the Vikings through three quarters, but the lead slipped away in the fourth thanks to a 23-15 Ed-Co run. MFL MarMac secured the win with an 8-5 overtime advantage.

The Bulldogs out-shot the Vikings 47.4 to 32.9 percent despite taking fewer attempts. Ed-Co hit eight threes in the game, compared to three by MFL MarMac, but missed a whopping 31.

Senior Grace Anderson followed up a 26-point performance from the previous game with 33 in this contest, after going a stellar 15-20 from the field. She also accounted for seven team rebounds and two steals.

Hannah Bogdonovich hit double digits with 16 points, and secured a double-double with a team-high 13 rebounds. Her five steals and four assists were most among Bulldog players. Other key contributors were Ashley Shaw with seven points and Kaitlin Picha with six.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs couldn’t keep the momentum rolling. A 44-38 loss to Turkey Valley on Dec. 6 snapped a three-game winning streak.

The teams were fairly evenly matched statistically, with the Bulldogs gaining a slight 34 to 30.9 percent edge on field goals and out-rebounding the Trojans 36 to 27. But MFL MarMac couldn’t capitalize on free throws, missing six of 10 attempts.

Anderson chipped in 13 of the team’s points along with eight rebounds, an assist and a steal, while Bogdonovich added nine points and nine rebounds, an assist and a steal. Caydence Moon’s stat line included eight points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist.

MFL MarMac returned to winning ways Dec. 9, in a 57-38 rout of Postville.

Three players—Ashley Shaw with 16 points and Bogdonovich and Autumn Shaw each with 14—hit double figures. A team leading 10 rebounds also gave Autumn Shaw a double-double. Bogdonovich totaled six rebounds, Moon five and Ashley Shaw four. The team stole the ball from the Pirates 14 times, four of which came from Ashley Shaw and another four by Picha.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the week Dec. 10, with a narrow 30-29 loss to Kingsland, Minn., in a Border Battle match-up at Luther College.

Similar to the game against Ed-Co, the fourth quarter proved the undoing for the Bulldogs, who watched a six-point third period lead evaporate in the final minutes.

The Bulldogs struggled from the field, hitting just 26.1 percent of shots, and made fewer than half their 29 free throw attempts. Turnovers were also a problem, with MFL MarMac coughing the ball up 23 times.

Ashley Shaw’s 12 points led the way, and her five rebounds were second most on the team. Picha knocked down two shots from behind the arc, for six of her eight points, and added three rebounds and an assist. Autumn Shaw picked up six points and two rebounds.

MFL MarMac now sits at 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Upper Iowa Conference. This week’s schedule includes a game at West Central on Dec. 13, before North Fayette Valley comes to Monona on Dec. 16.
