It was an up and down week for the Central boys wrestling team, with some wins and success, but still with some room for improvement. The return to action started at the Upper Iowa Conference Dual Tournament on Jan. 5, where the Warriors went 1-3 in duals and 10-16 in matches.

The Warriors took on North Fayette Valley in the first dual, losing 57-15. Braxton Bormann (120 pounds) and Nate Shirbroun (170) provided the only victories, with Bormann winning a 7-3 decision and Shirbroun getting a fall. The team went 2-5 in matches and forfeited five matches.

The following dual was against MFL MarMac, which the Warriors lost 70-12. The 12 points came from pins secured by Bormann and Shirbroun. The Warriors lost the other six matches and surrendered 36 points due to forfeits.

Central put together a solid dual against Riceville, going 4-2 in matches, which led to a 30-18 victory. Bormann continued winning, this time with a 7-0 decision, as did Shirbroun, who got another fall. Joining them were Preston Kulper (132) and Nick Deitchler (138), who both won their matches by fall.

The Warriors battled Postville in the final dual, going 2-3 in matches while giving Postville seven forfeit wins. The Pirates won 57-14. The Warrior wins came from Deitchler in an 11-0 majority decision and Bormann in a 15-4 majority decision.

Next up was the 42nd annual Central Invitational, where the Warriors finished seventh of 12 teams. The highlight was Bormann, who was the champion at 120 pounds, while Deitchler was runner-up at 132. Sam Fettkether placed fifth at 160 pounds and Shirbroun was also fifth at 170.

The Warriors look to build on this past week with a single home meet this week, scheduled for Jan. 12 at 6 p.m.
