Bulldogs pick up two conference wins

Wins over Postville and Turkey Valley last week improved the MFL MarMac girls basketball team to 10-5 overall and 8-3 in the Upper Iowa Conference.
The 71-16 rout of Postville on Jan. 17 was the biggest of the season for the Bulldogs, who jumped out to a 21-9 first quarter lead and never looked back.
They held the Pirates to a measly 15.2 percent shooting, including two points in both the second and fourth quarters and three points in the third.
Postville collected only 16 rebounds—with just five on the offensive end—and turned the ball over 28 times. Nineteen Bulldog steals were a large part of that.
MFL MarMac, on the other hand, hit over 54 percent of its shots and made it to the free throw line 19 times compared to the Pirates’ seven, sinking 12 of those attempts.
Senior Ashley Shaw racked up a season high 26 points to lead the Bulldogs. Her stat line also included seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. Fellow senior Grace Anderson’s 21 points and 11 rebounds gave her another double-double. She was responsible for the team’s lone block as well.
Other leaders included Hannah Bogdonovich with 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals and Kaitlin Picha with six points, five assists, four steals and a rebound. Brooklynn Moon picked up a team-high six assists and six steals and added two points.
The Bulldogs followed that up with a 52-46 win against Turkey Valley on Jan. 20, avenging a close loss from earlier in the season.
After holding just a 24-23 lead at halftime, MFL MarMac pulled away with a 20-10 third quarter run that increased the advantage to 44-33. The Trojans rattled off 13 points to the Bulldogs’ eight in the final period, but couldn’t overcome the deficit.
MFL MarMac shot 37.7 percent from the field and continued to make it to the foul line, hitting 10 of 22 chances. The team also limited its turnovers to just 11.
Anderson shot a spectacular 11-14 for 25 points, and pitched in five rebounds, two steals and one of the Bulldogs’ four blocks. Bogdonovich connected on two of three attempts from behind the arc, for six of her 10 points, and led the team with six assists. She also had one block.
Autumn Shaw provided a spark off the bench, hitting three of six shots for nine points. She grabbed four rebounds as well. Picha added six points, six rebounds and two assists.
The Bulldogs now head to North Fayette Valley on Jan. 24, before hosting West Central on Jan. 27.
