The undefeated 14-0 Central girls basketball team made light work of last week’s two-game schedule. Now, the Warriors will head into the busiest part of the season, consisting of four games in five nights and five games over the next 10 days.

In the first match-up, the Warriors opened a 24-3 first period lead over West Central and coasted to a 75-27 victory, holding the Blue Devils to fewer than 10 points in three out of four periods.

“We set the tone early with our pressure defense. Nine minutes into the game, we were well in control of the game at 32-5. We worked a couple different things defensively, stuck to the basics on the offensive end and did a good job of attacking the basketball off the dribble,” said coach Mark Wiley.

The Warrior offense ran through Delaney Scherf, who put up 26 points on 64 percent shooting from the field, while hitting 66 percent of three-point shots. She added six assists, six steals and three rebounds to the stat line.

Grace Kuehl contributed 14 points with four assists and eight steals, while Ashlyn Scherf added nine points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Gracie Cummer and Oakley Armstrong combined for 10 points and five rebounds, and Haley Frieden and Hannah Asche each scored four points.

Offensively, Central shot 46 percent as a team, and the defensive pressure limited the Blue Devils to 37 percent on field goals, 18 percent on three-point shots and forced 33 turnovers.

“We did a good job of moving the basketball, therefore getting the defense out of position and allowed us to attack baseline and down the middle of the lane,” Wiley said.

The second game of the week was a thoroughly decimating victory over Postville, as the Warriors held the Pirates to fewer than five points in every period of a 67-12 final score. It was a one-sided affair for the Warriors, who held the Pirates to 19 percent shooting, compiled 26 steals and forced 47 turnovers, while scoring 55 points off those turnovers.

“We played a very good game defensively. We were effective in multiple looks and forced a lot of turnovers with our ball pressure,” Wiley said.

D. Scherf led the team with 28 points and added eight rebounds, five steals and four assists. Frieden followed with 14 points, six steals, four rebounds and two assists. Kuehl and Asche finished with six points each and combined for seven steals.

In all, nine Central players scored points, shooting 46 percent from the field.

“In both games, we did a good job of sharing the basketball. West Central we had 23 assists, a season high. We had 16 assists in the Postville game,” Wiley said. “Delaney continues to be consistent on the offensive end. Kuehl had a couple very good games by attacking the rim. Frieden shot the basketball well against Postville. It is good to see different players stepping up and taking care of the basketball for us with limited turnovers.”

As Central heads into the hardest part of the schedule still undefeated and chasing a conference championship, Wiley commented on the state of the team and whether or not there is added pressure.

“Busiest week of the season with three out of the four games at home, thankfully. Our bench is very important in giving us depth and allowing all players to get some rest each night,” he said. “I’m excited about how the season has gone so far. We continue to work one day at a time and focus on the next game. Again, each game is important and we continue to focus on the game in front of us, win or lose. Our off-the-bench players have done a nice job of contributing and will be needed even more this week with four games.”

The four-game gauntlet started Jan. 23 against West Central, followed by a rematch with the Pirates Jan. 24. Central will have a non-conference game at Waukon on Jan. 26, then host Clayton Ridge Jan. 27.
