The MFL MarMac boys track and field team kicked off its outdoor season last week in meets at Decorah and Postville.
The Decorah Early Bird on April 3 was highlighted by first place finishes in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes by Bulldog senior Karter Decker. He turned in respective times of 11.18 and 22.70 seconds to edge Clear Lake runner Titan Schmitt in both races.
MFL MarMac junior Wyatt Powell also ran a solid time of 11.65 seconds in the 100, putting him fifth. Koda Warrington was 14th in the 200, thanks to a time of 25.31.
Jacob Schellhorn led the Bulldogs in the distance races, with a second-place effort in the 3200. He crossed the finish line in 10:46.63. Tucker Ruff claimed eighth in the 800 with a time of 2:18.55, while Brent Roe’s 2:49.69 placed him 15th.
Schellhorn was also MFL MarMac’s lone hurdler, turning in a time of 1:06.39 to earn eighth in the 400-meter distance.
The Bulldogs’ top relay finish came in the 4x200, where a time of 1:37.12 put them second behind Clear Lake. Two separate MFL MarMac teams placed fourth and eighth in the 800 sprint medley, while both the shuttle hurdle and distance medley teams were seventh.
In the field events, Hunter Christofferson threw his way to fifth place in the discus, thanks to a distance of 113-11. A throw of 38-11.75 put him ninth in the shot put, while teammate Aiden Schoulte came in seventh at 39-09.50. Warrington and Eli Hanson leapt to 12th and 14th, respectively, in the long jump. Warrington hit 17-06.5 and Hanson was at 17 feet.
MFL MarMac placed sixth of seven teams with 46 points. That was only three behind fifth-place New Hampton. Mason City won the meet with 146 points, edging host Decorah by one.
The April 6 Postville Foster-Kiesau Relays were even more successful for the Bulldogs, whose 78.5 points put them third overall. Waukon took the top spot with 165, and South Winn totaled 103.
Many of those points came in the relays, after MFL MarMac earned first in both the 4x100 and 4x200. The 1600 distance medley placed second and the 800 sprint medley and 4x110 shuttle hurdle relay were both third.
Schellhorn turned in another second-place mark in the 3200, this time with a 10:48.07. Three Bulldogs—Powell in third, Anthony Bunting in fourth and Decker in sixth—finished within the top 10 in the 100 meter dash, and Hanson raced his way to fifth in the 400.
Christofferson continued to impress in the field events, with fifth-place throws in both the discus and shot put. Schoulte took fourth in the shot put. Other top field performers were Warrington with a fifth-place jump of 16-09 feet in the long jump and Parker Kuehl with a 5-04.50 height in the high jump. That put Kuehl third.
Two meets are on the schedule this week, at Decorah April 10, then the MFL MarMac Co-Ed Invite on April 13.
