Central golf earns team and individual wins against Postville

Central kicked off the golf season last week, facing Postville at the traditionally windy Tri City Golf Course. The tough course, which coach Ryan Burke admitted wasn’t a favorite among the golfers, was no match for the Warriors, as the boys easily defeated the Pirates 206-231, and the girls narrowly lost 247-251.
“I was impressed with how everyone played and very impressed with everyone’s attitude. They didn’t let anything get them down and kept pushing forward,” Burke said. “For our first meet, I thought it went very well and everyone adapted to the different green speeds and hills very well.”
The boys were led by medalist Brock Eglseder, who shot a 48, as did Isaac Wellendorf, who was the runner-up. Isaac Loan finished the match in third place after shooting a 51, while Marcus Evans hit the clubhouse in sixth with a 59 and Max Fettkether put up a 62 to end the round in eighth. Jake Hertrampf was 11th, Keaton Klingman 13th and Mark Hertrampf 14th.
On the girls side, Central also finished one-two, with Haley Frieden taking the first place spot with a final round 54. Runner-up Makayla Erickson shot a 56.
Maddie Schmidt shot a 69 for seventh place and right behind her in eighth was Jillian Finley, with a 72. Rounding out the team were Caitlyn Druecker in 11th with an 81 and Macie Winters in 12th, after shooting an 83.
“One of the highs is that the kids learned how to hit some different shots. With the high winds, they were playing more conservative on certain shots to keep the ball out of the wind,” Burke said.
Heading into the next match, “we’ll concentrate on hitting smart shots and not getting ourselves in trouble. If we can keep the ball in play and out of the trees, we will in return score lower. Playing smarter will be our main focus,” he added.
The next match for the Warriors was scheduled to be April 17 against West Central at Big Rock Country Club. On April 20, they’ll take on North Fayette Valley at the Elkader Golf and Country Club.
