The Sept. 5 home cross country meet at Tri City Golf Course in Luana was a historic one for MFL MarMac. The Bulldogs had both the individual male and female champions in Jacob Schellhorn and Charlotte Meyer—with Meyer being the first MFL MarMac girl to win a race in around 15 years. The girls also won a team title for the first time in recent memory.
Meyer ran a time of 22:59.03, five seconds faster than North Fayette Valley’s Annie Murray. As a freshman, it was her first time running the longer high school distance.
“But it wasn’t too much farther [than middle school],” she acknowledged. “I’ve been running over the summer.”
Heading into the race, Meyer admitted to being a bit intimidated, but said her goal was to place in the top 10. She didn’t imagine winning.
“I knew I was capable,” she said. “Keeping a positive mindset is a big part of it.”
It was also important, Meyer added, to get a strong start.
“You’ve got to get ahead of the crowd before you get stuck behind them,” she said.
Meyer was joined in the top 10 by teammates Cora Keehner (fifth at 23:26.84), Brooke Donlon (sixth at 23:33.13), Taryn Moser (eighth at 23:59.91) and Skylar Fisk (ninth at 24:19.47).
Other Bulldog finishers included Evelyn Ruff in 14th, Kennedy Bachman 16th, Emma Koether 29th, Lauryn Sandstrom 39th, Emma Driscoll 47th and Mariah Moser 49th.
MFL MarMac’s 27 was the top team score. NFV placed second at 48 and Prairie du Chien was third with 87.
Meyer was happy to accomplish team success with a group that is “always so nice and encouraging in practices and really good friends.”
“It’s good to stick together and run together. It feels good [to win as a team],” she shared.
The Bulldog boys were not able to field a full team, but found individual success with senior Schellhorn. His 17:49.40 time was well ahead of the 17:55.53 from Prairie du Chien’s Sam Kramer.
Fellow senior Tucker Ruff turned in a 20:25.92 for 15th place, while Logan Ross was 62nd with a 28:56.68 and Payton Schultz 64th with a 30:13.80.
The Bulldogs have two meets on the schedule this week: at the Guttenberg Golf and Country Club on Sept. 10, then at North Fayette Valley High School on Sept. 12.
