JoAnn Vivian Meyer, 87, of Monona, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor. JoAnn was born May 16, 1937 to Helmer and Myrtle (Fosaaen) Johnson on the family farm, Decorah. She attended kindergarten through eighth grade at Egge School in rural Decorah and graduated from Ossian High School with the class of 1955.

 

On May 31, 1959, JoAnn was united in marriage with Jerome Meyer at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Four children were born to this union. JoAnn was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, where she served as Sunday school superintendent. JoAnn was also involved in both 4-H and Girl Scouts as a leader. She volunteered at the Vesterheim Museum and was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. She enjoyed collecting cookbooks, sewing, avidly reading, attending steam shows with Jerome and rummage sales. JoAnn spent much of her working career with Northern Engraving in Waukon and with Kwik Star in Toledo before retiring in 2011.

 

Surviving JoAnn are her children, Joy Meyer-David of Boise, Idaho, Janelle (Jeff) Meyer Smith of Farmersburg, James (Lisa) Meyer of McGregor and Jeff (Carol) Meyer of Toledo; grandchildren, Adam (Jennifer) Smith, Austin (Kelli) Peters-Smith, Aaron (Amy) Smith, Avrey (Hailey) Smith, Tristan Meyer, Richard Sadler, Anne Sadler, Sierra (Adam) Stevens and Dakotah Meyer; great-grandchildren, Parker and Lola Stevens, Jackson Smith, Lilian and Holley Smith and Scotty Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

 

JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Meyer, on Oct. 13, 1984; son-in-law, Charlie David; grandson, David Wnek; her parents, Helmer and Myrtle Johnson; her siblings and their spouses, Marge and Earl Fosaaen, Arnold Johnson, Howard and LaVerne Johnson, Arlene and Morris “Butch” Nelson, Alice and Ahlert Anfinson and Ken and Dixie Johnson; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Werner and Melvina Meyer; sister-in-law, Chris and Don Baade; three nephews, Larry Johnson, Jon Fosaaen and Jim Fosaaen; and two nieces, Marilyn Anfinson and Michelle Krueger.

 

A visitation was held on Nov. 15, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana. There was also a one-hour visitation before services at the church on Nov. 16, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, with Rev. Jeremy Wolfe as the officiant. Burial followed at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery in Decorah.

 

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Monona is assisting the family with services.
