The Prairie du Chien boys wrestling team concluded its regular season schedule this past week with a dual at Caledonia-Houston, Minn. and the annual SWAL-SWC Clash Conference Tournament at Prairie du Chien High School.
The Hawks traveled to Caledonia High School last Thursday to take part in a triangular meet that also included La Crescent-Hokah (though PdC and La Crescent-Hokah did not wrestle each other). The Warriors jumped out to a 22-3 lead after five matches before the Hawks began to climb their way out of the deficit. Despite PdC winning five of the final eight matches, the Hawks still dropped the dual 33-25.
PdC got wins from Hunter Reid, Mason Hird, Jackson Perkins, Carter Simmons, Blake Thiry and Jack Simmons.
Prairie du Chien returned home two days later to host the annual SWAL-SWC Clash Tournament for just the second time in program history. Behind one champion, four finalists and seven top-7 place winners, the Hawks finished in fourth place out of 13 teams with 151.5 points. Thiry defeated Darlington/Black Hawk’s Ross Crist 4-1 in the championship match at 215 pounds to claim Prairie’s only individual championship of the tournament. Thiry joined Rhett Koenig as the only Hawks to win three SWAL-SWC Conference Tournament Championships. With his semifinal win over Fennimore’s Jayden Kopp, Thiry also broke the Prairie Wrestling program record for most career wins with his 187th career victory. The record of 186 career wins had been held by Traeton Saint since 2019.
Finishing as runner-ups for the Hawks were Reid (113 pounds), Porter Kossman (132 pounds) and Simmons (285 pounds). Other place winners for Prairie included Hird (third place at 138 pounds), Perkins (fourth place at 144 pounds), Keaton Achenbach (sixth place at 106 pounds), Bryce Lenzendorf (sixth place at 157 pounds), Jack MacEachern (sixth place at 175), Jake Kramer (seventh place at 150 pounds), Carter Simmons (seventh place at 165 pounds) and Clark Fritsche (seventh place at 190 pounds). Landon Thiry also placed second in the JV Clash Tournament at 120 pounds.
Prairie du Chien travels to Dodgeville on Saturday, Feb. 15 for the regional tournament as the road to Madison begins for teams and individuals.
